When people come into my shop, the remark is often "these are such Great Hats!"~ Thus the name Great Hat!
The first thing I notice when I begin to create a profile for my shop is a drop down menu that lets me select one of the following. Assistant, Creator, Curator, Customer Service, Designer, Marketer, Photographer, Shipper. But no place is there box to check all of the above.
These are the hats I wear (no pun intended) running a home business alone. My husband, moral support and assistant, does the lions share of book keeping and taxes. I've had to learn these jobs mostly by trial and error, asking a lot of questions and making a lot of mistakes. It's an on going quest. I learn more every day.
The internet has been a lifeline for me for finding materials and marketing. When I started this business with a partner in 1994 we had no idea what the internet was!
We started making hats for our kids out of necessity. Other kids wanted some of the funky designs we had come up with and Great Hat! was born. We traveled around New England chasing craft shows...trying to find the "good ones" and finally realized we were spending more on show fees, gas and hotels than our little business could support.
Seven years later I bought out my partner. That meant I was now the owner of a craft table, some foam heads, a few boxes of buttons, trim, some rhinestone jewelry, and a few tubs of hats.
That was when I discovered Art/ Craft galleries and managed to get my hats into a few of them. I currently have year round space in 3 locations.
I have done a little wholesale. Most of those accounts were people who found me. I have not yet mastered wholesale marketing.
Then came the website and another job. I had a great web designer who helped me tremendously, teaching me how to navigate my website, change photos, tags and descriptions. http://www.greathat.com
I was reluctant to open an Etsy store but finally opened Great Hat! late in in 2010. I just tossed a few hats out there and they started selling. I have been steadily adding to my inventory here and on my website. My on line sales increase every year.
I still do a few craft shows in the area but have given up traveling out of state and paying hundreds of dollars to show promoters. I have found that the smaller shows have a lot of the same vendors that participate in the higher end shows for a fraction of the cost and free admission. Shows are always a gamble. You may hit pay dirt or you may spend two days of your life sitting in a gymnasium wondering why you decided on doing this show. I always bring plenty of hand work with me so if the show is a bust I haven't completely wasted my day. That said, shows are a great tool to get feedback. I love talking to people and getting their reactions to my hats.
After 21 years my business is feeling cramped working from home. I have a very small work room. All cutting is done by hand on my kitchen table. My basement is piled high with bolts of fleece, tubs of cut hats waiting to be sewn and more tubs of velvet and trims. I dream of having an actual studio, however I do love having everything right here at my fingertips. I don't have to leave the house to go to work.
