Green Blanket Portrait's Story

Hello, my name is Nick Helton, and I’m the owner and artist behind Green Blanket Portrait. I've dedicated my Etsy shop (Green Blanket Portrait) to my love of animals - In particular, my dogs Harvey, Sophie, and Sally. I pride myself on providing customers with naturalistic black and white pencil drawings and full color paintings of their favorite pets. My goal is to create quality, made-to-order pet portraits that are works of art with a classical look.

My wife Ashley and I have always had a soft spot for animals and a number of my sketchbooks are filled with drawings of our three dogs. The name Green Blanket Portrait was inspired by the memory of our dog Madison who passed away in the spring of 2013. Madison had a favorite green blanket which we all fought over because it was without a doubt the warmest blanket in the world.

I decided to become an artist when I was 11 years old. This decision came after I wrote and drew my first comic book called “Darekitty and Holly”. It was about crime fighting cats who (not surprisingly) resembled my own cats Chloe and Holly. Aside from that, my artistic training has a foundation in fine art and design with an emphasis in painting, drawing, printmaking, and animation. My interest in art led me to pursue and earn a BFA from Murray State University and an MFA from the University of Georgia. In 2010, my growing interest in animation and digital media was the inspiration that led me to earn a Master of Art and Design degree with an emphasis in animation and digital video from North Carolina State University. I’ve have been able to apply my training to a breadth of experiences in areas of art production/direction, motion design, art installation, screen printing, and teaching.

Please have a look around and contact me if you would like a pet portrait of your very own. Thanks for stopping by!

Best,

Nick

How to Commission Your Very Own Pet Portrait

Hit the “Request Custom Order” and let me know what you are looking for and when you need it. When you contact me via the "Request Custom Order" button, please let me know when you need to receive your portrait and I will do my best to accommodate you. Of course if you need a rush delivery for a special occasion, please do not hesitate to ask me and we can come to an arrangement.

The Portrait Commissioning Process

Once we confirm the details including the time estimate for completion and price, I will create a private, custom listing for you to make the payment. After payment is received, I will begin work. Please see the "Payment Policy" section for info about cancellation and refunds.

I will keep you updated about the progress along the way. Your portrait will be shipped pending your approval of a "proof" image that I will send electronically to you. This is meant to ensure that you are happy with the results before I physically mail the portrait. Once full payment and your approval is received, your order will be shipped!

Image Quality for Your Pets Reference Photos

Before I get to work, I need to confirm details with you and get a high quality photo of your pet. I am committed to capturing your animal’s unique character and a high resolution image helps me accomplish this goal. In order to see the details, I prefer to work from photos taken in natural light or well lit areas. Photos that are small and blurry, taken in low light, or have large amounts of glare due to the flash being turned on won’t produce the best results. Feel free to send me multiple images if you are not sure which one to use and I can make some suggestions.

Processing Time for a Commissioned Portrait

Typically, it takes around 3-4 weeks to complete each portrait. Please do not submit any payment until contacting me or hearing from me about my current turnaround time. The turnaround time is also dependent on your approval of the "proof" image I will send you. In addition, I also need to make sure that the photos you submit will produce the best results. With this in mind, please make sure to check your messages that I send you to avoid delays.

Copyright/Terms of Use

The photograph you submit must be yours or you must obtain permission from the photographer to use the image as a source for the artistic representation. Proof of permission must be presented to me if the photograph was not taken by you. I understand that this might be an inconvenience, but I must have permission if I create and sell an artistic representation of a copyrighted photo without permission. Without it, I can be prosecuted for copyright infringement.

I reserve copyright on all artwork, but you are certainly welcome to post pictures of the sample images or portraits you have purchased anywhere you like. However, any attempt to resell a printed or digital copy of a copyrighted image is prohibited and a really uncool thing to do. Also please note that portraits that you commission might be used for display and or promotional purposes.
