About

Giving Reclaimed Wood New Life

It all started when I was helping my dad (a contractor) on a job one summer, and the client had a new puppy. It was an adorable Yorkie puppy, and from that moment I knew I must have a dog. My mom had other ideas. I finally got her to agree that if I could find a way to pay for the dog, I could have one. She thought I would drop the matter, but I did not. I knew it would be a challenge, since I was 14 and too young for a job.

My grandmother was an artist. She did beautiful oil paintings and had recently taken up craft painting right around the time that I decided that I must have a dog. My mom would go to craft fairs to sell her crocheted items and would take some of my grandmother's things to sell as well. I figured I would make some things to sell myself.

I learned how to use the scroll saw from my dad, and started making and painting little animal magnets to sell. Saving up every penny I made from craft fairs and birthdays, I finally had enough to get a dog. I paid every penny for vet bills and food for that beloved dog in this manner until I was old enough to get a job.

High school and work took time away from craft fairs and I stopped painting. Then came college and then a house. I decided I wanted to raise chickens, so I started a flock. I had far too many eggs for us to use and decided I should sell some. Of course, I needed a sign to put out. I figured other people would want signs too, so I started to sell them here!

I make everything from reclaimed, scrap or salvaged wood (other than the wheels on the toys). It is salvaged from job sites from my dad or purchased at Renew in Brattleboro VT (they are a non profit that salvages wood and all sorts of things before building are torn down). I do not use anything painted with lead paint. Reclaimed wood is more work (pulling nails, filling holes, finding good pieces) but I think it is worth it. It saves wood from the landfill and the wood has more character. Recently Renew closed, and I am working to find additional sources of reclaimed wood. In addition to what I do have for reclaimed, I am using wood that is locally milled from trees that had to be taken down (from storm damage, to prevent storm damage, etc.) from private properties. It is naturally air dried, which uses no energy (as opposed to kiln dried) and is made from trees that would otherwise been disposed of.

I use non toxic water based paints. All of my outdoor signs are coated in an excellent exterior varnish that is non toxic as well. I believe that part of a product being environmentally friendly is that it should last a very long time.

Thank you for stopping by! I love working with acrylic paint and reclaimed wood, making signs, clocks, and more. The general theme of my shop is, of course, chickens, but I have plenty of other farm signs, geekery, pregnancy announcements, wedding signs, etc. I love custom work, so please do not be afraid to ask for a custom sign.

Because I use environmentally friendly reclaimed wood whenever possible, it has the extra charm of the occasional nail hole or dent. This adds to the effect of most of my work. If you have an idea for a custom sign that would need to be made with new wood, I can certainly do that too. All of the wood I use is in good condition, whether it be new or reclaimed.

Payment
Paypal, and credit cards processed through Etsy are the quickest payment methods, but I also accept money orders. Shipping will be delayed until a money order is received.

If a purchased order is not paid for within a week (unless prior arrangements are made) the order will be cancelled.
Shipping
Whenever possible I ship Priority Mail (or First Class if the item is light enough). International orders ship via First Class International. If a particular item does not have international rates listed, please contact me for a quote.

I also re-use packaging whenever possible (bubble envelopes, paper bags, etc). It keeps things out of the landfill a little longer.
Refunds and Exchanges
Please contact me within three weeks from date of purchase. Regretfully the return shipping charges will be the responsibility of the buyer (unless there are extenuating circumstances, or I have made an error), and original shipping charges cannot be refunded. If an item has been damaged in transit, please contact me about a replacement (there may be no need for you to send back the damaged item). Custom listings may not be returned unless I have made an error. Please be sure to check the mock-up carefully to make sure that it looks exactly as you want it to.

I want all of my customers to be happy. Please send me a message and I'm sure we can work something out.

CUSTOM SIGN POLICY
If you are interested in a custom sign, please send me a message. I do have a few custom listings, but if your sign doesn't fit within those guidelines, I can set you up a custom listing. I have LOTS of colors, and I can do different fonts, sizes, silhouettes, etc. I will provide a mock-up that will be the best approximation of what the finished product will look like. I have made tons of custom signs, and you can see a gallery of my work here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/21510417@N04/sets/72157627574405801/

CUSTOM SIGN POLICY MOCK-UP APPROVAL
When ordering a custom sign from one of my custom sign listings, please check your inbox for the mock-up that I will send you. Unless you are ordering one exactly like one that is pictured, I will need you to approve the mock-up. If I have not received a response from the buyer, I will try to email you and send a message on Etsy at least twice. If I think I have enough information, I will proceed with the order two days before the ship by date. If I do not have enough information, I will have to cancel the order. If you know you won't be near your computer for awhile, just let me know! Send me a message (or include it in the buyers notes) and I will know when to expect a response.

I use reclaimed wood on all of my signs. The toys are made of reclaimed wood as well, except for the wheels. An occasional source of reclaimed wood is my dad. he is a contractor and has always salvaged what he can. My largest source of wood is a wonderful local business that salvages wood from buildings that are torn down. I select the pieces that suit my needs and begin the process of removing nails. Reclaimed wood is considerably more work, but the final product is both eco-friendly and it has character. For that reason, most of my signs (not the wedding signs) are not painted on the opposite side. You can see the nail holes and dents, etc from the wood's previous life. You need not worry about lead paint, as I test any questionable previous finishes.

A NOTE ABOUT COLORS
Color display varies between different computer monitors, computers, tablets, phones, etc. I try to have my colors reflect as accurately as possible for my monitor (and I check other monitors occasionally as well). There is no way to be exact. If you are unsure of a color, I will try to describe it for you as well. If it is very important for a close match to something, let me know.
