Announcement    Naturally grafted and water-friendly, our truly unique wooden rings are respectfully shaped and grown on living trees as Living Form. Green your wedding rings, promises of love or other noteworthy moments of communion and accomplishment with the warmth, beauty, endurance and collaboration manifested in our Tree Rings.

***** "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but
when there is nothing left to take away." -- Antoine de Saint Exupery *****

All Tree Rings are harvested by pruning; no trees need be destroyed to grow these rings. Our collaborating Artisan Trees live in sustained relationships with the land and our Wizard.

Tree Rings -- an elegantly simple and truly unique manifestation of harmony, strength, collaboration, patience, and respectful relationship in wearable art.

Many rings can be tied, but each manifestation of a Tree Ring resides in an Artisan Tree's decision to graft for the well-being of the tree. Such harmony is uniquely embodied in each Tree Ring. With the intrinsic beauty and archetypal meaning inherent in each species of wood, what greater message can you share with a loved one...from our Tree Ring Grove to you.

With the uniqueness of each Tree Ring comes the extra strength and longevity of a natural graft that can be better than any human-devised joinery. Tied for grafting, the grain runs with the ring, which eliminates vulnerable, exposed grain ends along the band and creates chatoyant opportunities when the wood is carved smooth. No exposed grain ends along the band also increases the durability and water-friendliness of our Tree Rings.

Quoting the Wizard, “I work with living form, growing green wood into form using the natural, self-grafting tendencies of hardwoods. I rely on the tree’s natural healing process of callous reaction to naturally transform the twigs I tie into one-piece components without scraping any bark from the living tree. Self-grafted joinery is the results of the inosculation process of trees and can be incredibly stable and strong."

GIFT PACKAGED
Each Tree Ring arrives in a black velveteen ring box snuggled within a gift-wrapped white paper box with a tube of tree ring balm and best care instructions. Unusually large rings that do not fit in the black velveteen ring boxes are set in white tissue in the white paper box. All rings are individually gift wrapped.

..EASY CARE
Just as metal rings tarnish, Tree Rings lose luster from gentle wear and water immersion. With our Wizard's deeply penetrating finish, simply buff the Tree Ring surface with any clean, soft cloth to bring back the luster. Need more than a buff? Without removing the Tree Ring on your ring finger, apply a very small dab of the free tube of Tree Ring Balm and spread with a finger from your other hand to lift the surface dirt. (What gets on your ring finger will spread inside with a twist or two of the ring.) Buff with any clean, soft cloth (no waiting) to restore the finish.

As with any ring of any material,
..AVOID compression, weights, rough surfaces and sharp objects!
..AVOID anything putting a great deal of pressure on a clenched hand!
..AVOID long and continued immersions in liquids, especially cleaners!
..Remove ring when at risk or at night for morning (swelling) fingers.is better than no balm at all. Coconut and Olive Oil are in most kitchens. Caster Oil is often in the herbal closet for aching muscles.)

..DURABILITY – Graft, Grain & Finishing
....Both GRAFT and GRAIN are two reasons why our Tree Rings are EASY CARE and WATER FRIENDLY.
(1) A graft can grow from two to five years before being pruned for a ring. During this time the future rings are growing on living tree twigs.
(2) The Wizard's tying process for the tree's self-grafting process adds the unique durability of NO exposed grain ends along the band.
(Whereas, most wood rings are carved cross grain, steam bent or laminated--all processes and joinery techniques tending to leave the wood vulnerable to moisture and water damage, Green Wood Wizard's tree-grown rings are carved with the grain.)
....A third reason why our rings are more durable, easy to care for and water friendly is
(3) Frank’s Wizardly DEEPLY-PENETRATING FINISHING PROCESS. (For a hypoallergenic and food safe, water resistant, durable, easily maintained and exceptionally hard finish, we use the hardest of known natural waxes and oils. Carnauba is a wax of the leaves of the palm Copernicia prunifera. Tung oil or China wood oil is a drying oil obtained by pressing the seed (the drupe) from the fruit of the tung tree, Vernicia fordii. It is NOT oil from a nut.)

Imagine no need to take your ring off for water and ocean play!
You can bathe the dog and wash the dishes!
Some completely forget they have a ring on.

Speaking of water, the natural warm humidity of human fingers does NOT influence the strength of the grafted joinery of living form.
(In glued or joined wooden rings, this expansion and contraction factor, albeit minute, can be a problem.)

HOW WE DO IT:
IN SIMPLE ELEGANCE, OUR RINGS ARE tied on twigs, harvested by pruning, and deeply impregnated with the hardest, natural, food-safe wax and oil during the carving-finishing process for exceptional durability and water friendliness. Each ring is carved to reveal a one-of-a-kind relationship in tree-growth patterns.
The meticulous care and detail of our Artisan Wizard's tying and tending in the Tree Ring Grove extends to the hand-carving and finishing processes that reveal the tree's artistic offerings...authentic, autonomous, one-of-a-kind tree growth patterns carved to standard jeweler sizes...TREE RINGS.
....The INCLUSION of Gems
The Artisan Trees, having completed the inosculation process of self-grafting can then be harvested from OR...begin the inclusion process that secures all gems, stones, or beads in Anniversary or Engagement Rings without need for artificial joinery or fasteners. This natural inclusion process of the tree's cambium wood requires one more year of tree growth and a special jig to hold the inclusion.

....FACTS
....All ring bands have a gentle angle that adds to the wearing comfort,
....Wide band wearing comfort is increased when the band is narrower than the face.
....Most Tree Rings take 5 to 6 years to graft; some can do it in 1 year; Stone, gem and bead inclusions take 1 more year after the graft is complete.
....Our finishes are hypoallergenic and food safe.
....All prices are based on time, durability, and wood species.

****** "Sweet, sweet ring. I do indeed wear it daily.... It is incredibly durable and resilient and is just as lovely and sturdy now as when you first sent it [in 2010]. Seems impervious to scuffing or chipping or damage of any kind. So, in short, the ring is fantastic.… Thank you so very much! It elicits compliments regularly!” --Ashley Adams English, writer, homesteader, 2016 *****

MORE DETAILS:
..CARVED OR BRUSHED
All Tree Rings have their inside dimensions CARVED to standard jeweler sizes.
....WHEN THE OUTSIDE SURFACE IS CARVED,
the rings often display a level of chatoyance, the sparkling optical reflectance in the wood as it is turned in the light. This occurs when the orientation of the fibrous, surface group of light and dark wood grain is perpendicular to the ring surface and happens quite often in carved Tree Rings because they are tied in circles. Sometimes this chatoyance even happens on the band.
....WHEN THE OUTSIDE SURFACE IS BRUSHED clean of bark,
the rings often have carved shoulders. Those with perfectly formed shoulders requiring no carving for comfort have BRUSHED shoulders and faces and are our Most Natural rings. Brushed rings reflect less carving time in their pricing.

...CROSS-BAND COMFORT. In addition to the warmth and lightness of wood, this comfort is enhanced by slight angle of the band crossing from one side of the shoulder to the other side of the other shoulder. Because of this, the cross band is slightly angled, much akin to the angle where the palm of your hand joins your fingers. (Another gift of the trees.)

****** “I love the look of rings but I tend to take them off in situations where I need to be more comfortable, such as going to bed or even typing on a computer at the library. This was never a problem with the Green Wood Wizard ring. This ring was so incredibly comfortable that I would completely forget I was even wearing it. Over the past few months, I have worn it hiking, washing dishes and cleaning but it still looks as pristine as it did when I first received it. Overall this ring's quality and uniqueness are extraordinary and I would highly recommend it to anyone.” – Jessica Laiti, Blacksburg VA (2017) *****

..DEALS -- Who’s not looking for a deal? Here’s a couple of natural ones:
....STYLE: NATURAL BRUSHED Tree Rings. We pass on time saved by less carving through the prices on our “Natural brushed” wood rings. These wood rings have brushed faces with carved shoulders and bands.
....SPECIES: FLOWERING DOGWOOD Tree Rings. For wood ring lovers desiring superior durability for less than an oak or hickory Tree Ring, consider the flowering dogwood. The common flowering dogwood, Cornus Florida, (a) allows us to bend twigs tighter for smaller rings, (b) grows a good graft in a year, and (c) has wood comparable to oak in density yet has a fine interlocking grain, appearing much like bone. A quality wood ring you can wear every day without concern and a short grafting time that allows us to sell this durable wood at a lower cost.

About

Why destroy nature when you can collaborate!

"It is my joy is to manifest masterful Tree Ring creations, to share these Tree Rings with the world while maintaining integral business ethics, and to live my heartfelt passion: researching the growing of living form as artistic, functional creations through grafting.
Working with the trees as respected earth-essential stewards and Artisans has deepened my appreciation of nature. Living before, during and after each twig-grown ring is harvested, our Artisan Trees are maintained in integrated, sustainable ecosystems." -- Frank Hyldahl

Tree Rings – a Tree-Human Collaboration for Eco-Technology & Art.

When Frank said "no more" to construction and began his grafting research experiments back in 2003, little did we know how strong grafted wood rings could be nor had we imagined how his ever-refined finishing processes (with tung oil and carnauba wax) would increase each ring's durability.

See our Wizard tie a ring on a living tree at http://www.youtube.com/greenwoodwizard.

and for those wanting a bit more, below is an
Interview with Frank Hyldahl, our Green Wood Wizard extraordinaire!
December, 2009:

“I've had a life-long interest in creating a deeper relationship with trees. Born and raised in the country, I was interested in reciprocal relationships with nature early on. As a child I built many tree houses and used bushes as playhouses. I remember being very impressed when I was 4 or 5 and saw a horseshoe grown almost all the way into a tree.

“As a teenager I got the idea of growing a living house by planting many trees close and grafting them together as they grew. That idea came from a conversation with a brother of mine in 1971. Somehow we got on the subject of ship timbers and choosing timbers a for the ship that were already curved in the right way to make certain elements of the ship. It occurred to me to wonder at the possibility of curving timbers to grow a house with living trees.

“The thought of a living structure came together in remembering a story our mother had read to us when we were younger, called My Side of The Mountain by Jean Craighead George, in which a boy ran away from home and lived in a big hollow tree. I guess, since I could never find a tree big enough to live in, I wanted to grow it. I'm still thinking about how to actually do a solid wall.

“Later on, when I learned about permaculture and living systems, living machines, and forest farming/gardening, it seemed to me my idea tied right in to this whole thing of repatterning culture into sustaining, respectful relationships. While coordinating construction of our PA Bioshelter project, Three Sisters Farm & Nursery, in 1987, the idea of growing a living bioshelter further germinated. This concept became part of my permaculture course design in the Fall of 1993 (East Hickory, PA, PDC apprentice certification with Dancing Green, Inc./Dawn Shiner).

“When I decided I really had to do the living structure five years ago, I realized I had to figure out other ways to grow wood into specific shapes to make a living in order to have enough money and time to develop the living structures. Out of the long list of things I could do that would be commercially viable, rings seemed the smallest and simplest to fit into our limited landscape.”

"By creating this new art form of Tree Rings for sale, my aim is to support further research for this new technology, my ultimate goal being the creation of living structures."

"If I listen to what the tree is telling me, the cooperative effort between us can work." –Green Wood Wizard, Frank Hyldahl

WELCOME. Please enjoy the beauty of our sustainably-grown, live-grafted, wood jewelry. Green Wood Wizard offers elegantly grafted wooden rings that are grown on live trees to serve you with unprecedented strength, durability and ethical ease. Our collaborating, sustainably-maintained Artisan Trees produce Tree Rings without giving up their lives and, like all healthy trees, they sequester carbon, produce oxygen, build soil, and regenerate our watershed year after year.

We love to hear about our rings after they've left the Tree Ring Grove: pictures, stories...adventures, misadventures...demise, longevity.... Having worn our own Tree Rings daily, we are confident patrons will enjoy their Tree Ring. With Oaks, Hickories, and Cornus Florida Dogwoods, we expect the longest of life times. As an agricultural product that is research based, we will exchange any Tree Ring whose graft does not hold. For any other replacements, we will help you continue your Tree Ring experience at a discount.

We are particularly interested in feedback regarding longevity and stories of usage for all our Tree Rings. Our research leads us to believe some hardwood Tree Rings may be worn far longer than we've imagined! We are very curious. Your willingness to share feedback is valuable for our research, and will generate future discounts.

Returns and exchange details
Exchanges:
Please contact us if you desire to arrange an exchange. If the exchange is a matter of sizing, please note some rings can be made 1/4 to 1/2 size larger.

Exchanges of one-of-a-kind Tree Rings are determined by what woods in what sizes are on hand or growing or by your patience. Tree Rings are SLOW JEWELRY and we work with the natural talents of the trees. If there's nothing of like appearance, a new choice can be made. We are here to serve you. The Artisan Trees are growing or can be growing your ring. Talk with the Wizard by phone or email us.

...Exchange SHIPPING
We cover domestic shipping for the first exchange of rings, assuming you have returned the first ring, ring box and ring booklet undamaged. Since this is an exchange, hold onto the Tree Ring Balm for your next ring. All shipping from your end is your responsibility; fortunately, Tree Rings are light.
More than one ring exchange or an international exchange, all shipping costs (both ways) are the purchaser's responsibility.

...REFUNDS with returns:
If within twenty-one days of gifting or wearing a Tree Ring and either form or fit is not what is desired, please call or email us to let us know you will be returning your undamaged ring, ring box, ring booklet and ring balm for a full refund -- no questions asked.

We do appreciate all feedback and encourage you to email us before returning your purchased Tree Ring so we can be on the look out for the package.

Additional policies and FAQs
RING SIZES. All Tree Rings are crafted to standard ring sizes. To learn the ring sizes of all your fingers, we HIGHLY recommend going to a reputable jeweler with a metal ring-sizer. Using string or paper can be iffy. Remember a ring needs to go over your knuckle but not be able to slip off. If you're desiring a wide, tapered band, jewelers also have a ring-sizer for wide bands. We can translate European sizes into our standard US sizing.

All your fingers can enjoy experiencing Tree Rings! Two rings side-by-side on ring finger and pinkie work well together. Sometimes my wife adds a third (a fresh-water pearl inclusion) on her forefinger for fun occasions.
