About

Rural Missouri girl creates handmade products from salvaged materials.

I graduated from college in 2010 with degrees in fine art and design art and opened a graphic design business. Then, in 2012 I opened my Etsy shop (Grindstone Design) as a way to find a home for some cool finds I had taken out of a house I was remodeling. I had so much fun selling these first items that I kept the shop going and growing!

Almost all the items in my Etsy shop use salvaged items or materials. I love taking old things and giving them a new life. It's inspiring to think that some wood I salvaged from an old chicken coop could be made into a coffee table and then find it's way to an apartment in New York. I love all kinds of art, but personally I find the most meaning in making functional items that will be used in day-to-day life.

I love how my Etsy shop fits in with my graphic design business as it gives me the chance to get out of my office and get my hands dirty. And I'm incredibly lucky that both businesses allow me to live in a place that I love...a little town called Solo in rural Missouri.

It's a great experience to watch my Etsy business grow. I started out creating items in my house...it quickly took over the entire house. My husband didn't appreciate that I used the chest freezer as a workbench to saw on and that there was sawdust all over the house! I even had saw horses set up in the bathroom. So I cleaned out the shed behind my house and now I have a proper shop.

I never thought my Etsy shop would grow like it has. But I've sure enjoyed the journey!

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

I would be happy to help customized one of our current listings, or to make a whole new item that you've dreamed up. Just message me with a description of what you have in mind and we will discuss the details.

Where does the wood come from?

The lumber used is from barns in rural Missouri that range from 40 years to over 100 years old. Many barns fall into disrepair and are falling down and we work with the owners to get all the usable barn wood so it can go on to have a second life. Many of these barns would just be burned or left to rot so it is a lot of fun to reclaim the lumber and make it into usable items.

Will I get splinters from the rough wood?

It is unlikely that you would get a splinter from a barn wood product. We lightly sand each piece to take off the roughest parts and this smooths it slightly (and brings out beautiful variation in the wood color!). However, the wood is still rustic barn wood and anything is possible!

Can I put my barn wood product outside?

Most of the barn wood we use has spent over 50 years outside in the weather and there is no reason it couldn't spend some more time outside. The color and look of the item could continue to change due to weathering if placed outdoors.

Will my purchase look just like the listing photo?

The item you receive will not be the exact same as the photo but will be very close. Items made from real barn wood can't be replicated perfectly due to the lovely uniqueness of each piece of wood. However, I strive to choose wood colors and textures that are as similar as possible to the listing photos so there are no surprises. If you have any questions about a specific product, don't hesitate to contact me.
