About

Exceptional characters for exceptional people

I create exceptional characters for exceptional people. Are you an exceptional person?

My mom was always very creative and passed some of it along to me, along with an interest in dolls. From her I learned to keep working at something, to work on the details, to make it special.

Gradually I started making dolls. At first they were more along the lines of rag dolls, but that wasn't what I really wanted to do. So I kept making different dolls, until I finally arrived at the figures I make today. Some realism, some fantasy, some cartoon.

After moving to Oregon, I lived on the northern coast for a year and started making dolls to sell at the Astoria Saturday Market to make money after being out of work for a long time. I had all the supplies, so it didn't cost much to get started. The name Grits and Giggles was suggested at that time.

I sold a fair number of dolls that summer and the idea was planted in my head to keep working at making dolls. Another couple of years went by...

I made a few dolls here and there and met the man I ended up marrying and made a number of personal dolls for a special woman who had multiple myloma and wanted them to give to her friends and family members after she passed away. From the work I did on those dolls, my dollmaking started to evolve into what it is today.

Jeff, my husband, has been an incredible support and I don't think I could have gotten as far as I have without him. I'm still growing as an artist, but that's the way it should be.

The inspiration can come from anywhere. Someone I see on the street, a movie, TV show, picture in a magazine... Often I'll start with a clothing pattern and sort through the characters hanging out in my head to see who wants to wear it. Once I have a volunteer, I set about making her, then the outfit. While I do use patterns for the clothing, I sew the garment onto the doll and usually make other changes so it ends up being a custom outfit for her.

Currently I'm only making female dolls, but there are some guys hanging around waiting their turn to be made.

I've been published twice in Art Doll Quarterly. My avatar, Grace, was in the bride doll challenge issue in 2013 and more recently, Helen was in the Medieval challenge in late 2014.

Currently I'm only shipping within the United States. Please contact me if you're not in the US, I'm willing to make exceptions.

I will not always be able to ship the same day you purchase.

I want to make sure your doll is in top shape, so before packing them up, I go over them with a fine tooth comb and make sure all the stitches are in place and all of the necklaces and bracelets and earrings are in good order. Additionally, I work during the day. I will ship as soon as possible. if there are any delays beyond a day or two, I will let you know immediatly.
Refunds and Exchanges
Of course I want you to be happy with your purchase. If you want to see more photos before buying, please contact me and I'm happy to take other shots. If your character is damaged in shipping, please let me know and we can figure out a way to repair the damage. If, after everything, you're just not happy, please return the doll and I'll do a full refund.
Additional policies and FAQs
At this time I don't do custom orders or wholesale. Each doll is handmade by myself and takes around 40 hours to make. Because I wouldn't be able to set a time frame, I don't feel it would be fair to accept custom orders.
