Stay Grounded in the Good Stuff

Welcome - I’m so glad you’re here!

My name is Kara, and I’m a wife, mom, and relationship educator turned candlemaker. I earned my PhD in family studies and have worked in the field of relationship education almost a decade. I wanted a fun, creative outlet to share relationship tips + resources with people across the country, and I expanded my relationship coaching business to include relationship-inspired products as the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.

The shop allows me to blend beautiful home decor with practical relationship tools and encouragement. So, you’ll receive a high-quality, handmade product, AND a little something to give your relationships a boost.

For me, giving back is another way to stay grounded in good. We donate a portion of our profits to Children International. Purchase with a purpose knowing anything you buy here will help support and encourage families in poverty around the world!

In addition to the shop, I share relationship tips, tools, and encouragement on social media @groundedingood, and through my relationship blog and e-newsletter at groundedingood.org. I also offer a limited number of virtual coaching sessions for engaged and newly married couples as my schedule allows.

I hope you’ll find something here to encourage you in the relationships that matter most.

-Kara

Frequently asked questions

Scents

Every nose is different and picks up the notes in a fragrance differently-and some scent blends are just tricky to describe! :) We do our best to provide photos that accurately depict our products and descriptions that highlight the main notes in your fragrance so you have an idea of what to expect. Keep in mind scents smell different cold (unlit) vs. hot (lit), and a reed diffuser will be a different experience than a wax option.

If a fragrance is strong for your taste, move it to a larger, more open space to diffuse the scent. If you find a scent too mild, try it in a smaller bedroom, bathroom or office to really fill your space! For diffusers, more reeds = more scent.

Consider the wax melt scent sampler to test all our fragrances!

Refunds/Exchanges

We are glad to offer a refund/exchange if we make a mistake (e.g., we send the wrong item), if there is a defect in your item that keeps it from functioning as described, or if it arrives damaged. Please message us if there’s an issue and we can talk through the options together.

Keep in mind, each item is handmade, meaning slight variations are possible. The listing photos are representations of our products, but the one you receive could vary slightly due to imperfections in the materials, and in the maker! :) Things like "frosting" and wet spots are largely unavoidable when working with soy wax. But, rest easier knowing we're a little crazy about quality control, so the standards for anything to get out the door to you are pretty high!

Bulk Inquiries + Discounts

We offer discounted rates for bulk purchases (typically 12+ pieces). Contact us to discuss timelines and pricing for large or recurring orders (e.g., wedding or shower favors, realtor gifts, etc.). Bundles are also available for some items!

Subscribe to the e-newsletter at groundedingood.org and follow @groundedingood on social media for exclusive discounts and flash sales. We also have a listing for "imperfect" candles at a steep discount!

Wax Melt Safety + Use Tips

Wax melts don't have wicks, so you will need a UL listed electric warmer approved for wax melts. Add one cube to your warmer. As it melts, it releases scent. Over time, when you turn on the melter and get little/no scent, it's time to replace the old wax with a fresh cube.

Wax melts are a great flame-free alternative to candles, but melted wax still gets very hot! Keep it out of reach of pets/kids and never move it from room to room in liquid form. Don't leave the warmer unattended or running 24/7. Your little scented workhorse needs a breather after a few hours to avoid overheating (see guidelines for your specific warmer). NEVER add water or oil to wax melts.

See safety label and your warmer's guidelines for more tips!

SUMMER SHIPPING NOTICE

We are based in Texas, so we take extra precautions in extreme heat to help protect your candles/melts! We use thermal bubble wrap and cold packs (when necessary), and ship candles/melts early in the week (usually M-W) to avoid packages sitting in postal hubs and mail trucks (not climate-controlled) for extended periods of time. All candles and melts ship Priority during the summer to expedite delivery.

Please use the tracking info. to keep tabs on your order and bring it indoors ASAP. Hours on a hot porch can quickly turn a lovely candle into a melty mess!

If extreme temps will not allow us to ship your order out in a timely fashion, we will email you to discuss extended processing times, or offer a refund if you

Diffuser Safety

If you have a perfume sensitivity, you may have a better experience with wax melts or candles where the oil is already incorporated into wax.

Diffuser oil is flammable. Do not light the reeds or place your diffuser near an open flame. Keep out of reach of pets and small children. Do not ingest the liquid. Avoid placing in areas where the glass bottle could be knocked over. May damage wood, porous surfaces, and electronics if spilled.

Diffuser How-To

Diffusers are a low-maintenance, flame-free alternative to candles, and they provide continuous scent for 3-4+ months.

Ten reeds are included with your purchase, but start with a few and adjust based on the size of your space and your scent strength preferences. A small room may only need 3-4 reeds, so you may not use them all. When you want to refresh your scent, gently flip your reeds over (about once a week), taking care not to spill oil on the kraft paper label, your counters or floors, etc.

Quick Tip: The more reeds you use, and the more often you flip them, the faster you’ll go through the oil. Pace yourself! :)

Candle Care + Tips

Light your candle away from pets, kids, drafts, and anything flammable! Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Be sure to allow enough time to burn your candle so the wax melts all the way across the top. This makes for an even burn, which helps your candle last longer! If you only burn the candle for a short time, especially on the first burn, the candle will end up burning straight down with lots of wax left around edges (tunneling).

Do I really need to trim my wicks?

Yes, unless you are a fan of smoking candles and dangerously high flames! :) When the candle is cool, simply clip or break off any charred edges on the wicks and remove the trimmings before relighting. You want the wick around 1/4" for each burn. Some folks use their fingers, or finger nail clippers, if they don’t have a wick trimmer. Just make sure the wax is cooled so you don't get burned touching the wick...plus, waiting until the wax is hard again will help keep any carbon build-up on the wick from falling into your hot wax.

About Soy Wax

Soy wax is one of the trickier waxes for makers to work with, but it is one of the cleanest burning options available with great scent throw! Our soy wax is all-natural and sourced from US grown soybeans!

FYI, it is completely normal for soy candles to have a rough texture on the top after burning, in fact, this is a great way to tell a candle is actually made from natural soy wax! Because we do not use dyes, some candles may appear ivory, and others may develop more yellow or brown hues over time, depending on your fragrance. Soy candles can also "frost," developing a white powdery finish over time. Rest assured, any color change will not impact the performance of your candle at all! :)
