Our Story

We have been selling beer drinkware since October 1st, 1999. We started out of our garage selling German beer steins and beer glasses on After the first few months of business, I realized that it would be better to have a separate website exclusively for the beer glassware. This allowed me to have a full site dedicated to all the glassware needed for a home bar, decorative items, and accessories. So in February 2000, was born selling every shape and size of beer whiskey, martini, margarita glass, and more. We also added decorated beer logo glassware including such brands as Murphy’s, Bass, and Guinness. Guinness became a big market for us because of the rich history of Guinness and the famous artwork. The Guinness toucan and other art is well known all over the world and we had products decorated with the Guinness menagerie of animals that included glassware, posters, keychains… you name it, we had it with the Guinness logo. For years, we had more Guinness logo merch than the official Guinness webstore. Business was doing well and in 2002, I left my day job to focus on the websites. I started another website which can be seen here on Etsy.

Even though business was good I wanted another challenge. I wasn’t satisfied with what i was doing. I knew I could do more to make people happy. Ever since I was a kid, I liked my name on things: back of my t-shirt, personalized this or that, but it was hard to find. At the toy store or on vacation the places that sold keychains or the little personalized license plates Dean was rarely there. I could pay and on the back of my t-shirt but the stock items like the license plates was not an option. I always thought, I wish I could custom order the plate or better yet do it myself. This do it myself was still in my blood so the next level, next challenge for the business was to add customization on glassware. I figured there must be other people like me that wanted to put their name on a beer glass and I could put my name on the glass!

In 2006 I bought a laser engraver and got into custom and personalization work on all the glassware I was already selling. Adding laser etching as an option took the business in a whole new direction. I expanded the glassware line even further, and the timing coincided with the craft beer boom that was (and still is) going on. The craft beer movement had been going on since 1980 when President Jimmy Carter legalized homebrewing. In the mid 2000’s the movement hit its stride. I added beer growlers, but first off custom beer paddles, taster and sampler beer glasses. The custom glassware was good business but the custom growlers took on a business life of their own. We were the first company offering laser etching on the 2 liter German fliptop growlers. The company that imported them and the exclusive US wholesaler called me one day to ask me how I was engraving them considering the lid, handle, and the other hard work on them. I told them that was something I figured out and I wasn’t going to tell them. This was probably in 2008 and the beginning of being a GrowlerSmith. I was doing something no one else was doing to growlers and had created a trade secret. Business continued and the other styles became available. In 2012, my work with growlers took another step forward, I opened a brick and mortar location for the websites that is also a growler filling station and neighborhood craft beer tavern.

Oh I forgot to mention in all this, my passion is not just for glassware and beer growlers, I have a passion for craft beer. That’s a story for another day, stop by Growler Room sometime, I’ll tell you that story and the first beer is on me.

So fast forward to today. I decided to expand again and we are now on Etsy and have been the prototypical Etsy seller for 18 years, a small family run business that started out of a garage. We still consider ourselves a small business and like it that way, even though we ship all over the world and have done work for many individuals to Fortune 500 companies and everyone inbetween. The thing I like hearing the most is “I’ve looked all over for someone that had this product and you were the only place I could find or I needed only one item and you were the only place willing to just one.” My reward is people getting that exclusive “license plate” that I was never able to find with “Dean” on it. And yes I finally found Dean on a license plate and I didn’t have to make it myself, but I do engrave myself a new beer glass for my birthday and put something different on it each year.
