Gubarev drum created by Dmitrii Gubarev in 2013 in Ukraine

Instrument with the name GubarevDrum was created in November 2013 by Dmitrii Gubarev and appeared as the result of long experiments of master over standard constructions of traditional tongue drums. This idiophone became a successful attempt of the master to move away from the customary sound of these instruments in the direction of a new, more rich and dramatic sound.

Dmitriy’s life has been changed, after the moment when he heard the sound of handpan. Very special, cosmic sound and incredible attraction of hanpans inspired him to start creative research in this direction. Eventually Dmitriy decides to try himself in making these instruments. He organizes a small home work shop, where he begins his acoustic experiments. At the very beginning Dmitriy focused on working with the most interesting representatives of the world of intuitive music instruments – tongue drum, or as it is called in the West - steel tongue drum.

In the process of creative search master came to understanding what exactly he does not like in the sound of usual petal drums. It was the same, single type sound of these instruments, with lots of parasitic harmonics and typical "tank" metal overtone. He tries to get rid of these negative moments in the sound. He make many experiments with metal, tuning and manufacturing. During the process of experimenting, Dmitry suddenly found an unusual acoustic effect, the result of which opened up possibility to give the tongue an additional overtone. This idea was detected due to another interesting instrument called Trinidad steelpan, the sound conception of which is built on similar basis.

Care instructions

Gubarev drum is made of stainless steel, and therefore the instrument itself does not corrode. The art coating of the instrument in a very small extent is exposed to the aggressive environment though. To combat the humidity, we recommend placing the desiccant packet in a bag with your Gubarev drum.

For cleaning the instrument after playing on it, use the natural cloth soaked with ballistol or natural refined oil. You can possibly use such sprays as the WD-40 or their analogues.

DO NOT use water or alcohol to clean the instrument!
