My goal with my creations by Gudrun Borghildur is to make beautiful things with as small a carbon footprint as possible.

I’m a maker. I’m a creator. I’m lost if I’m not using my hands to make things, and always have been.

When my daughters were little I made their clothes, and drew the pictures on the birthday cards they gave their friends. I even made a ski-outfit for my husband and a few gala-dresses for myself.

Then, one day, I came across a bag of remnant leather and it dawned on me that leather is the medium that speaks to me more than others. With the leather, I made a dress suit that I never wore because I didn’t like the color. I tore both skirt and jacket apart and made cushions for my daughters, thus starting an infatuation with cushions that lasted several years.

To nourish this need for more leather I started buying used clothes from the Red Cross of Iceland, which operates in a similar way as thrift stores in the US. People donate items to the foundation for fund-raising, but because so much is donated, not everything can be sold in the stores. The clothes I buy are damaged/second-hand items that are torn or worn but are as good as new for my purposes.

When I lost my day-job I remembered that my boss had once said I should start a business of my own. So, I literally jumped into the deep end. I set up a workshop, was accepted to sell my designs in a cooperative of local makers in Reykjavik. The rest is history. I’m addicted to leather and that’s that.

I have since moved on and make all kinds of items from discarded leather clothes. I’ve gone from making cushions to bags, to mittens, to aprons, and now to fish-skin book covers.

I could buy new leather in the store but I prefer to use previously owned items as my raw materials because I believe we need to protect the environment for the generations to come. With the onset of Global Warming, it’s so important for me to show responsible behavior. And I want to make my carbon footprint as small as possible!

That’s why recycling and upcycling is my thing. My goal is to turn this re-cycled raw-material into beautiful, useable objects. It makes me truly proud and happy to take a previously-owned item and completely reinvent it that way.
