About

G U E R M A N T E S

Guermantes Vintage was founded in February 2012. "Guermantes" is a nod to Proust's In Search of Lost Time, wherein the Guermantes family name acts as a signifier of elegance, wealth, and history. The philosophy of the shop is influenced by Proust's treatment and understanding of memory. Each vintage piece is a symbol of essential memory, not only personal (for example in the ownership of a particular individual) but cultural memory as well. Its details - seams, hemline, buttons, silhouette - all reflect its era and the way the world was at the time it was made. Much like Proust's narrator biting into a Madeleine, I believe that experiencing vintage clothing is an immediate portal to memory, a window into a personal and a cultural past.

In Search of Lost Time was first published in English translation over several years, between 1922 and 1931. Though Guermantes Vintage spans the 1910 through the early 1960s, my clear focus is on my stock of exceptional 1920s and 1930s era vintage.

"...But Mme. de Guermantes seemed to me to carry to an even higher pitch the art of dressing. If, on going down for a moment to call upon her, ...I found the Duchess swathed in the mist of a garment of grey crepe de chine, I accepted this aspect of her which I felt to be due to complex causes and to be quite inevitable, I let myself be overpowered by the atmosphere which it exhaled, like that of certain late afternoons cushioned in pearly grey by a vaporous fog; If, on the other hand, her indoor gown was Chinese with red and yellow flames, I gazed at it as at a glowing sunset; these garments were not a casual decoration alterable at her pleasure, but a definite and poetical reality like that of the weather, or the light peculiar to a certain hour of the day.
....Is it their historical character, is it rather the fact that each one of them is unique that gives them so special a significance that the pose of the woman who is wearing one while she waits for you to appear or while she talks to you assumes an exceptional importance, as thought the costume had been the fruit of a long deliberation and your conversation was detached from the current of everyday life like a scene in a novel? ..." Refunds and Exchanges
All sales are final. Guermantes Vintage does not accept returns or exchanges. If you feel an item has been grossly misrepresented, please message me.

Please keep in mind that all items are vintage, used, and sold AS IS. I describe items to the best of my ability. Some very very minor flaws may not be noted. If you would like additional details or photos of any of my listed items please ask before purchasing. Please keep in mind that colors may vary based on computer monitor.

I cannot predict how a vintage item will wear and will not accept returns if an item becomes damaged after it has been received by the buyer. This applies especially to antique items, which can be especially delicate and prone to breakage. I try to estimate the wearability of my older items but cannot guarantee this. Antique silk should be considered especially delicate.

I do not allow refunds or returns based on size so please check measurements carefully and ask all questions before purchasing. Items may be pinned to fit dress form.

RESERVES:
If you would like to reserve an item, please contact me. Keep in mind that by reserving an item you commit to buying that item. A non-refundable deposit may be required for holds.

A NOTE ON CLEANING:
I consider all pieces sold here to be artifacts of an earlier time. As such I work to preserve and document them for future generations as best I can. I personally take a conservator's approach to the preservation of these textiles and recommend that they be cleaned and laundered as infrequently as possible.
