INGENIOUS!! I LOVE that this wristlet is made from recycled bags. The colors are vibrant the lining is pretty and sturdy. The size is perfect for what I really "need" to carry. It arrived quickly from the west coast. I thank-you and the landfills thank-you too! Well done Catherine :-)

I'm a sucker for anything with the attached words "can you do something with this?" Objects that others might throw away - like single use shopping bags - become an inspiration to me. At times the "stuff" comes faster than I can think of an idea. But it all gets sorted and stashed for the future with bits placed on the idea board. Often all it takes is a good walk and something will come to me.
With my family and their support they are instrumental in solving a construction problem with ideas and their own touch of creativity. #1, the architect draws and plans, #2 builds upright electric bases, half-pipes and skull bowls, #3 welds, grinds, bends and pounds steel into artful fences, security doors and windows and yard art, #4 a creative writer and extra pair of hands, Hubby lathes and carves, my Mom helps cut and sort bags and we all come together with ideas. We can't help ourselves! Busy and creative hands keep us all connected.
I've been sewing since second grade and my weaving started when I was a young mom of 1 and just wanted something to do with all the scraps from sewing. The "can you do something with this" started when friends started getting rid of all their double knit (remember that stuff?) and I decided rag rugs was about all it was good for and so it continues. I started picking up yarns and warp from garage sales and second hand shops and on my simple 2 harness floor loom this was perfect for experimenting. It kept it simple for the addition of more babies and less time.
Now with the boys growing and leaving I decided it was time to spend my energy on my own dream instead of busting my butt for someone else. This is a challenge for anyone but the peace and joy I have every day is well worth it. I never "go to work" but am working every day and loving it!

I love making new out of the old or discarded but my deepest interest was the loom. To me it was a dance with yarns, string and fibers but the cost of such an endeavor had restricted me to rag rugs from old clothing and discarded items woven on an old 2 harness rug loom. I'm also a drop zone for anything someone has with the words "Can you do something with this?" My boys were teasing me after a particular drop, tossing grocery store bags at me and challenged - "Can you do something with these?" The gauntlet was thrown! I went to my loom currently warped up for a couple rugs, started cutting the bags up and weaving, well...the rest is history! As the fabric has evolved through experience so has the designs and construction. Now as of December of 2014 I have used over 200,000 of those nasty bags and hundreds of old VHS movies. Bags dropped off weekly at a local market offering me a large range of colors from all over the world.
Each piece is unique and one of a kind crafted by myself from the collection, sorting and cleaning of the bags, spinning (plying) the plastic together, weaving the fabric, assembly, and final detail work.
