Thank you for checking out HandmadeByRnR. Me (Robert) and my beautiful wife (Regina) love working together in our garage/shop. Regina is the more talented one of the two of us, but she keeps me around anyway. We work well together, throwing ideas back and forth. We hope you enjoy the items that we have handmade with love and enjoyment.

Cutting Board Care

CLEANING a butcher's block board (end grain cutting board), use hot water and soap in the sink. Never ever use chemicals such a bleach or ammonia. Just as the wood soaks up meat juice, it will also soak up chemicals which can make you sick or just give a funny taste to the food. Some household cleaners can be very potent diuretics.

The only problem with washing cutting boards with soap and water is that sometimes it just isn't enough to get out the aromatic smells like onions and garlic. For that you need to use a good Vinegar wash combined with soap and water. Regular distilled white vinegar is a great cleaning tool for destroying foul kitchen odors.

OIL: You need to keep a bottle of FOOD GRADE mineral oil (which can be found at your local grocer) in your kitchen if you are to take proper care of a wooden cutting board. Not only will the oil help keep the board from drying out and cracking, over time that constant oiling will give your board a healthy wooden sheen.

It is important that the oil you buy is FOOD GRADE. That is, it can be used around stuff you might eat. Do not use teak oil or anything you find in the wood finishing section at the hardware store.

Apply a thin coating with a brush or your hands then let sit to absorb. Do not be tempted to wipe off any excess with a towel. The oil will absorb into the wood. After the oil has absorbed, wipe down with a dry paper towel.

STORAGE: The final key to wooden cutting board care is storage. You must have proper storage to ensure the life of your board. Extreme temperatures of heat or cold can cause the board to crack or break. Keep it stored at room temperature with a low amount of humidity. Thinner boards could warp under humid conditions.
