Happy Eyeballz Designs... My Goal, My Gift

For the moment, Happy Eyeballz Designs is a one-person shop, and I'm quite content and grateful to be that "one person". My shop opening is the culmination of a long-held goal, and a gift to myself. I manage my business from my studio apartment, apart from and scheduled around my full-time job.

My work space is not glamorous, "artsy" (or even as tidy) as I used to believe it was supposed to be, but it's mine and I LOVE IT! In addition to the usual household "stuff", I've had the good fortune of being able to acquire and surround myself with virtually everything I need to help me bring my design visions into being. Between my tools, jewelry components, books, magazines, photos and videos (all of which I'm constantly trying to keep organized), there is no shortage of inspiration.

Jewelry is my favorite and most important fashion accessory; I literally feel naked without it. I experience a very "special" feeling when I see a piece of jewelry (object/environment) that appeals to me, and that's what inspired my (silly but fun) shop name. The way I describe the feeling is to say, "That [thing I'm looking at] makes my eyeballs happy!"

I've always enjoyed hand-crafting and I come from a very artistic, creative and entrepreneurial extended family, so my unplanned yet very fortuitous sally into Jewelry Design was quite natural. From an early age I was exposed to knitters, crocheters, quilters, seamstresses; professional Fashion Designers; highly skilled cooks & gardeners; licensed Barbers & Hair Stylists; convenience store owners; professional musicians & singers; licensed Teachers; plumbers, painters, carpenters, electricians and auto mechanics. Most of these people were also business owners, so I witnessed entrepreneurs in action at an early age as well.

I took 2 jewelry-making classes in 2007, but aside from those courses I'm self-taught. I explored, studied and practiced many different types and styles of jewelry making and thoroughly enjoyed the process. The most valuable lesson I learned from my experiences was the importance of ultimately narrowing down my multiple areas of interest to a manageable amount, and then focusing on developing proficiency in those chosen areas.

As a result of "fine-tuning" my interests I discovered that I especially enjoy bead, pearl and gemstone stringing and knotting; bead and stone wire-wrapping; wire work exclusively; recycling, up-cycling, re-purposing and repairing "retired" jewelry. I also rediscovered my love of crocheting - and now I know how to do it using wire!

Being able to share my creations through the Etsy platform demonstrates to me that people from all over the world are awakening to the fact that none of us can any longer afford to conduct “business as usual”. Etsy contributes to individual and global economic growth by fostering entrepreneurship and community.

Etsy's secure online business structure serves to “level the playing field” by providing a democratic conduit through which anyone has an opportunity to build a business and achieve financial independence within a supportive, interdependent international community. For the individual, that translates into an incalculable amount of business support and inspiration, in addition to innumerable shopping choices.

I'm thrilled to be part of such an exciting, vibrant, thriving international business community! It’s difficult to imagine Etsy getting better than it is now, but I know that it will because as Shop Owners we witness it's evolution everyday. For that, I'm truly grateful.

Of course, it's NOT all about me. Though they're not actual "working" members of my shop [yet], I'm especially thankful to the following folks who were VERY supportive & instrumental in my efforts to open Happy Eyeballz Designs:

  • Simone

    Niece

Paper, Fiber & Jewelry Artist: Her invitation to join her for that first jewelry-making class was the catalyst that got me started on my Jewelry Design odyssey. Thanks again, Moonie!

  • Ron, Jr.

    Nephew

Hair Artist/Scholar/Volunteer: Since the very beginning he has constantly encouraged me to market my creations. He even generously used his own time to field research potential buyers for my designs.

  • Lorraine

    Sister

Home Decor Fiber Artist/Fashionista/Super DIY Maven: Artistic since childhood, she has always served as a role model and teacher in my quest to learn how to create beautiful objects and environments.

  • Judy

    Sister

Fashionista/Educator/Writer/Trend Monitor: A "Social Butterfly" and voracious reader, she keeps me up-to-date about business/political current events and emerging fashion trends.

  • Ann

    Sister-Friend

Fashionista/Auction Maven & Mentor/Partner-In-Tomfoolery: She's one of the few people outside of my family who REALLY "gets" me. She loves & wears all things that sparkle & shine, & generously gives me her "retired bling" to re-purpose.

  • Kathy

    Sister-Friend

Business Maven/Mentor/Madcap Road Trip Coordinator: A deep thinker, one of my closest friends & a VERY savvy business owner. Throughout our long friendship she has very generously shared her expertise with me. She also spearheads THE BEST road trips!

  • Brenda

    Sister-Friend

Multimedia Artist/Accountability Buddy: We lack a long history but share common business goals. When she proposed that we become AB's I thought, "YES; THAT'S A GREAT IDEA!" Our meetings REALLY helped me work through my fears & FINALLY open my shop.
