About

Sale of Quilts made by students at the Harbor House Quilting Project

I have been teaching at Harbor House as a volunteer once a week since 2005. The community, camaraderie and friendship that it has brought me has been an important part of my life as it fullfills a need for me to give back to my community.

Established in 2001, the Harbor House Quilt Project has taught the art of quiltmaking to over 20 refugee and immigrant women. Incorporating these women's highly developed hand embroidery and sewing skills with a traditional American art form, the quilting project provides our students a chance to connect with the greater community in a meaningful way. Through color and design, these women can communicate where words fail. Their creativity is all the more evident when you consider that they are working solely with an eclectic mash-up of donated fabrics. Each quilt is pre-washed, and can be machine-washed on cold and tumble-dryed.

Women from Cambodia, Guatemala, Laos, and Mexico come together once a week to work on new designs, share ideas, and enjoy a moment away from the demands of their everyday lives.

The sale of students' quilts goes directly toward program costs and the women quilters themselves, providing the hope of some economic help for their families.
