About

Swamp Jewelry: Inspired by moss draped cypress, cicada songs, and Louisiana ghost stories.

Growing up along the bayous of Lafourche and Terrebonne Parish, my grandparents sparked an undying flame in my heart for Louisiana's Cajun culture and spooky folklore stories. As I've grown older and more adventurous, that flame has drawn me into the magical swamps of Manchac, Louisiana, the rumored haunting grounds of the hurricane-summoning town oracle, Aunt Julia Brown.
As I began exploring deeper and deeper into the swamps, I began to fall in love and started collecting pieces of fallen cypress, twigs, leaves, and whatever natural treasures reminded me of this soulful place, and started developing jewelry to wear so that I could take the swamps with me when I couldn't be there, because I never wanted to leave. From there birthed my jewelry making obsession, and then came Haunted Cypress!
With my swamp creations inspired by the haunting beauty, folklore, and soul of the Louisiana swamps, it's become my mission to spread le joie de vive to the rest of the world. ♥

While Manchac is my main source for ethically sourced materials, I also collect from Honey Island Swamp, Dulac, New Orleans cemeteries, and various bayous and nature trails in Louisiana. We're always careful not to disturb the habitats of living swamp creatures by moving large pieces of cypress and never kill insects or animals for jewelry supplies.

My favorite version of the Aunt Julia Brown ghost story:
According to legend, Aunt Julia Brown was the town Oracle (some say a Voodoo priestess) and had a deep love for her community. She used to rock on her front porch, often singing a song that went "One day I'm gonna die, and I'm gonna take all of you with me", but not because she hated them, but because she loved them so much she never wanted to be without them, even in death. They say one day after she died, foretold by her song, the tragic hurricane of 1915 claimed the lives of many of the early settlers of Manchac in her hometown. Her cypress casket was found empty among the hurricane debris. She is now rumored to be found singing her song deep in the swamps of Manchac, singing for anyone who will dare to listen hard enough.
