FAQ
Abbreviations...what do they mean???

NSC - Non Structured Carbohydrate: the term used to describe the sugar/starch content of feed, i.e. the digestible carbohydrates. Horses are not designed to digest high levels of sugar and starch. NSC provides a basis for measurement. To measure NSC a sample of feed is sent to an accredited lab such as Dairy One, and analyzed for water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) and starch.
NSC is the sum total of WSC plus starch.
When high levels of NSC are fed, horses can become insulin resistant. Insulin resistance is associated with metabolic disorders including laminitis, Cushing's and colic. NSC below 12% is considered necessary to maintain long term horse health.

WSC - Water Soluble Carbohydrate: a process obtained during lab testing that combines with a starch total to produce a sum total of 12% or less(NSC) If you have a horse that's carbohydrate sensitive, you want to be 12% or less.

GRAS - Generally Recognized As Safe: specific to NSC numbers at 12 or less. Research is ongoing but for equine who are carbohydrate sensitive 12 % seems to be the magic number right now, as a safe level.
