About

Project Angel

Hello my friends! I am so happy that you made it here! Let me tell you a little bit about the angels in my shop. I created these angels in order to raise awareness about the prevalence of chronic pelvic/genital/sexual pain and in order to offer comfort, support and inspiration to my fellow community of pain-warriors. I wanted to raise awareness during the local art-fair in my hometown. About three months before the exhibit I decided that I was going to paint 30 angels. Each angel would represent one million of the estimated 30 million American women and the significant but undocumented number of men that suffer from chronic genital pain. I shared my intentions with my facebook support community knowing that my sisters in pain would be delighted. Little did I know how much support, encouragement and gratitude was awaiting me! With each new angel that I posted the joy and the support grew.

For the first few years of my illness I felt very alone in my passion and determination to be vocal and to raise awareness. I met a handful of women that like me were dedicated to speaking openly about their vaginal pain. I was frustrated that shame and silence kept our conditions in the shadows. How would we ensure that doctors receive the education that they need in order to diagnose and treat us properly if we were afraid to speak up? It was clear to me that a HUGE shift had to take place within the medical community. It was also clear to me that this shift depended upon us advocating to make it happen. I felt like a one-woman freak show on a mission... Until Project Angel happened!

As I painted the angels I asked if anyone would want to send me an image of themselves so that I could show that we were real women with real faces at the exhibit. I thought that 3 or 4 women might send me photos but the photos kept coming in. Suddenly I found that I was surrounded by 30 then 40 then 50 then 60 women that were completely open about their vaginal pain conditions. I felt embraced and supported by a deep and nourishing love that brings tears to my eyes as I write about it.

Project Angel has grown into a small grass-roots movement that consists of women who choose to share their stories openly. Currently we are lobbying The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to create guidelines, educational objectives and curricula for all chronic pelvic pain conditions including Pudendal Neuralgia, Vulvodynia, Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder, Interstitial Cystitis, Endometriosis, Pelvic Floor Dysfunction and Vestibulitis.

I truly believe that we will succeed in transforming gynecology. Today I know that there are so many of us (including the most wonderful doctors, physical therapists and nurse practitioners) working together to make this happen.

Before I say goodbye I want to thank each and every one of you for supporting my work, for encouraging my growth and for believing in my mission. Our mission!

Love,
Atara
