This was just a beautifully made, wonderfully honoring the person I gave it to as well as the one who had died. Both recipients were delighted with the workmanship and "heartfelt" touches. Thanks to Tim Bentley for his commitment to create and help touch the lives of so many who will be lucky enough to have his work in their keepsakes. The expert quality, timeliness and perfect way he puts together a shipment is just beautiful. A true artist.

About

Heartistics, for the hearts you hold in your heart.

I honor the tradition of my forefathers, by creating each and every item, as they taught me, one at a time. The inlays and mosaics are cut by hand, often with a handsaw. Each of my hearts is cut to its own unique, hand drawn pattern, which is then destroyed. My cradles are built with traditional mortise and tenon construction and engineered to be stored inside of two protective wooden crates for generations to come. I have been blessed to see one of my cradles already used by a second generation; and it is as beautiful today as when it was placed in the rafters some 20+ years ago.
Reducing and reusing waste is a priority at Heartistics, second only to craftsmanship. The scraps generated by larger projects find their way to my collector’s edition and toy cars; and ultimately to my jewelry pieces. I use no pigments, dyes or colorants of any kind in my work; allowing for only the natural color of the various woods. My durable clear finishes, many of which are also reclaimed, create the special, warm, natural look that defines a Heartistics design.

Welcome, welcome, welcome; and thank you for stopping by my little corner of the inter-web. I hope that you enjoy my creations and the wonderful natural beauty in the wood they are crafted of. If you have ANY questions OR concerns about what you find here, please, by all means, let me know.

I accept custom orders as well as customized; just click on "Request custom item" on the left side of my shop's main page.

When you have a moment, please look for the Heartistics page on Facebook; www.facebook.com/Heartistics. There you’ll have the chance view items before they are available for sale here as well as some before they completed and are quite readily customizable. If you do find an item there that you are interested in purchasing, I will be happy to provide it to you as a “reserved Item” listing here on Etsy. In addition, you will have the opportunity to follow along with special projects from their unlikely beginnings through to fruition.

Facebook is one place where I list 72 hour "New Item Discounts" on all newly released items; and from time to time I run contests and other exclusive discounts.

Twitter ( @Heartistics ) is also where you will find the same 72 hour discounts and other promotions.

I am currently working on a site where these promotions and specials will be available for those who prefer not to have facebook of other social media memberships; I completely understand.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q:
How do I determine what length of cord I wish to have my pendant strung on?
A:
The best method is to physically measure with a cloth (sewing) measuring tape and allowing it to hang to where you would prefer the pendant to rest.

Q:
Do you have a sizing guide for the necklace?
A:
Yes. Listed below are “Typical” lengths for necklaces.
*Choker: 14” – 16” (355mm-406mm)
*Princess: 18"-19” (457mm-482mm)
*Matinee: 20” – 24” (508mm-610mm)
*Opera: 28” – 32” (711mm-813mm)
*Bracelet: 7” – 9” (178mm-228mm)
*Ankle Bracelet: 8” – 10” (302mm-254mm)

===These lengths are provided as a guide only. Your specific needs may vary.===

Q:
Do your items fade? I have bought wood beads from a craft store and they did.
A:
No, they will not fade; actually their patina will become richer, warmer and/or slightly darker over the years as a result of exposure air and to the UV rays in sunlight. There are a couple of varieties of wood that will lighten slightly over the course of a decade or two. American Black Walnut is one wood that will become slightly lighter, not fade; as this change takes place completely through the material, not just the surface. The ebonized walnut that I use in some of my pieces will not fade and will remain completely black.

Q:
What are the white specks and lines that I see on some of the items?
A:
Glare.
Some species of wood are “open grained”; meaning that when cut, the surface exposes tiny hollows in the wood called pores. What you are seeing is the light reflecting off the sides and/or bottom of these tiny open areas. Photography does a great job of capturing this glare, especially when magnified such as the images you see blown up on your computers monitor. Viewed with the naked (or bespectacled) eye in real world conditions, one sees only the natural color of the wood.

Q:
How do your products stand the test of time?
A:
I have been making wood jewelry for over twenty years using the same adhesives, techniques and finishes that I do now. I periodically see pieces of my work being worn that still look great after ten to twenty years of use.

Q:
I forgot and took a shower/went swimming with my wooden jewelry on! What should I do? Have I ruined them?
A:
Your jewelry is most likely fine and suffered no damage. Wipe all surfaces with a soft dry cloth and allow to air dry; wearing them is a great way to accomplish this. If your pendant has the cord threaded through it, try to blot the water from the cord by pinching it between layers of cloth or towel. ALL pieces are thoroughly soaked inside and out with an exterior grade penetrating Danish oil finish prior to applying any other finish that may be present.
Please don’t; but I have seen them go through the washer AND the dryer, they came out very clean.

Q:
What is Ebonized Walnut?
A:
“Ebonized” Walnut is a responsible alternative to true Ebony, a wood that aggressive harvesting has left many species rare and/or endangered. I ebonize the Walnut used in my pieces by inducing an environmentally friendly chemical reaction between naturally occurring tannins in the wood itself and metallic iron; in this case, steel. American Black Walnut contains comparably high levels of naturally occurring Tannic Acid (a tannin) making it an ideal candidate. I make the clear, all natural solution myself from nontoxic ingredients; and then soak pieces of Walnut in it for several months, sometimes even longer depending on the size. The solution is clear; there are no pigments; it is not dye; and it is not a stain. The resulting black (iron tannate) has been achieved at the molecular level, it does not fade, bleed, rub or sand off. It is through and through; and the permanent color of the wood.

Q:
Do you make items other than jewelry?
A:
Yes. I build high-end baby cradles that are designed and built to be handed down generation after generation after generation. As well as being beautiful, they are built such that they easily store in two sturdy, unassuming crates that protect them for decades at a time. Last year I was fortunate enough to see one of my pieces “come down from the rafters” to cradle its second generation.
In addition to cradles I build artisan quality wooden vehicles and jewelry pieces that are available separately or as keepsakes built from the scraps of your Heirloom Baby Cradle. Heart pendants are also a popular keepsake that is likewise available.
I design and build two unique and distinct lines of picture frames, as well. One line is art in and of itself either as a single frame or as a set. The second line;Frames Passed; is built solely from reclaimed and salvaged material in a manner that strictly maintains each materials “as found” appearance.

Q:
Do you accept custom orders; and what type of items?
A:
Yes, whatever you/we can dream up.

Q:
What if I think I know what I want but it’s hard to describe; and I only have a general idea.
A:
I offer design, CAD drawings and engineering for a reasonable cost.

Q:
If I have detailed plans or drawings can you build from them?
A:
Yes; as long as they are your plans, public domain; and not the unauthorized intellectual property of another.

Q:
Will you build a copy of a piece I saw someone selling on Etsy?
A:
NO.
