About

The Heart of a Hero

Karen L. Syed is the president and COO of Echelon Press, LLC/Sassy Gal Enterprises. Every day is a new success story for her as she continues to grow herself and her businesses. She has seen seven of her own novels published (previously written as Alexis Hart), along with numerous articles and short stories. Her latest, "Lost and Found" is tickling the funny bone of readers worldwide. She is committed to helping and encouraging everyone she comes in contact with to seek a healthier and more positive quality of life by reaching for their dreams.

After suffering from an unknown virus in 2008, Karen became the reluctant recipient of a pacemaker/defibrillator. For years she muddled along, losing 100 pounds along the way. In 2013 things took a turn and after a hurried visit to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL she took on another device called an LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) to keep her ticker ticking until she could get a heart transplant. But didn't slow her down…much.

On May 14, 2015, the prayers of many were answered and she received "the call." They had found a heart suitable for transplant. She considers it a mixed blessing; thankful to be alive, but filled with sadness that someone else had to lose a loved one to make it happen.

With that in mind, Karen has set up her newest venture in the form of The Heart of a Hero: Crafts for a Cause. She is, along with several others in her family, making items by hand to help spread awareness for things that truly matter.

When the transplant journey began, she made a move to Orlando, FL with her nearly perfect husband, so they could be closer to Tinker Bell, oh and Mickey Mouse, life has really changed. She has begun seriously collecting Disney Tinker Bell Trading Pins. She has also been ensconced in researching her family tree. Oh and then there is the quilting. Oh and beading…

This site is dedicated to my unknown hero. I will never be able to express my gratitude to her or her family, but I will do my best to make sure that others are aware of the problems so many of us face and to understand what each one of us can do to help others. Each sale is a tribute to her and to all of the others we have lost and to the caregivers and those loved ones they fight so valiantly for.

Welcome to the Heart of a Hero. Everything in this shop is made by hand with love. My goal is to increase awareness with regard to things that truly matter. Each item for sale is associated with a specific cause and it dedicated to someone who either suffers from whatever it is, cares for someone who suffers, or to someone we have lost.

Please take a moment to read the information included with each item and perhaps it will inspire you to take action yourself, and not just with your purchase. However, each purchase will make a difference. A portion of each sale will go to the Gabriel House of Care in Jacksonville and to *Donate Life.

*Please note that the above statement is in no way an endorsement from either organization. It is simply my decision to support those causes with respect to my condition.
