This set is gorgeous. The blue pops so much against the copper. I got it as a birthday gift for a musician, and she couldn't be any happier!! The scroll work (amazing!) reminds her of a treble clef. Bonus! Thanks so much.

About

"Yes, I made it all myself."

It's hard to believe everything started with pocket change and a few packets of stone chip beads from the local dollar store, but that is exactly how it happened. I started making jewelry as a way to cope with what was going on in my personal life. I had been seriously ill for nearly a decade and the toll taken on the professional, social and financial aspects of my life were undeniable. Despite having my health restored, high medical costs left me deeply in debt and rampant discrimination in my chosen profession left me few prospects. I needed something to occupy my mind while I recovered from the trauma. I moved back in with my parents feeling like a complete failure.

My mother had given me a package of stone pendants she found at the local dollar store and she mentioned how there were also some stone beads there as well. I tagged along on the next trip and decided to purchase a few of those packets. I began, as most jewelry artists do, with simple, stone chip bracelets, earrings and necklaces. My first “studio” was little more than a folding table, set up at the end of a couch in my parents’ rec room. As awful as things were, I always felt better when I made jewelry and as the months wore on, we found more places to shop for supplies. Walmart had stone beads in their craft section, JoAnn's had even more (across the border from our home in Sault Ste. Marie, MI) and the Internet offered a veritable cornucopia of materials! I also did my first craft show in Sault Ste. Marie, MI and my mother came with me. We didn't know it at the time, but the Sault High Christmas Craft Show was one of the biggest shows in our area and it gave me quite an education! There I was with my makeshift racks, scavenged from our household and we were next to serious artisans who had clearly been doing shows for years. I had a lot to learn.

My mother continued to be my biggest supporter as I grew my tiny business. She came with me to shows, celebrated with me each time my jewelry made it into a new store and helped me plan to pay down debts with my earnings. Making jewelry was starting to change my life. I slowly began to acquire the trappings of being a real business as I built up my show display, added tools and materials to my growing studio (which moved into part of a storage room in my parents’ basement), got my business license and started selling online. I knew I’d crossed the line between hobbyist and entrepreneur when I began to see other local artists as “competitors” and got into wire-wrapping as a way to make my pieces stand out from theirs. That’s when things really started to take off.

Locally, my Tree of Life pendants were a huge success and I soon branched out into other aspects of wire-work. I amassed a collection of books, tutorials and videos as I diversified my technical repertoire and gradually began introducing more exotic materials that appealed to my scientific tastes, such as meteorites, tektites, fossils and various crystals (incl. bismuth). I continued to do well at local craft shows but soon realized that if I remained in my hometown, there would be limits imposed on my growth. I started making plans to move out on my own again—and to leave Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

3 years after the journey began, I moved into an apartment of my own in Toronto; complete with a large studio space so I could work from home to support myself. It is from this space, I write to you now. It’s been a long and difficult journey, but I’m proud of what I have accomplished. I can hardly wait to see where I am 3 years from now…

NEW!!! Check out my webcam to see what I'm making right now (only runs when I'm at my bench): http://www.myearthcam.com/heatherjordanjewelry

I began making jewelry after a long physical illness which, for a variety of reasons, made continuing on in my chosen scientific career impossible. I launched Heather Jordan Jewelry officially in 2011 and truly enjoy working for myself! ;)
