HeitziArts

Handcrafted Upcycled Art, Jewelry, Judaica, Scarves

Bethesda, Maryland

Announcement    With a love of bright colors, contrasting textures, and merging techniques, I specialize in one-of-a-kind handcrafted jewelry, hand-knit scarves, hand-built ceramics, copper-wire crocheted Kippot, clocks made of old books, and whatever I dream up late at night in my home-studio, where I also delight in teaching many craft techniques to children and adults.

You can view more of my work at www.heitzi.com

I make everything in my shop by hand -- the ceramics in my basement studio, where I have a slab roller and kiln, the jewelry in my dining room, where I spread out across the table, and the scarves where-ever I happen to be. Everything is made with great care and lots of laughter.

I'm happy to accept special orders, and will work with you to create a piece you will love.

Thanks for visiting!

Finding my bliss through battling cancer.

I might never have discovered the joy of artistic creation had I not had to battle cancer when I was thirty-three years old. I was a lawyer, returning to work after my second child's birth, when a lump in my neck turned out to be a massive tumor.

After treatment, I returned to law, but I kept getting sick, so I took a break for rehab. At loose ends when my sons were at school, I began playing with clay. I fell in love — the feel of clay in my hands, watching a pot grow from a lump of mud, serving food to family and friends from bowls I made myself.

Throwing pots is a lesson in how to live: center yourself; shape your life with care and a balanced hand.

My arts business just happened. I built a studio in my basement, and began teaching art and selling my work at local stores and crafts shows.

Immersing in this creative life has extended and enriched the years I have been given. The joy and calm I derive from the creative process has helped heal me, and has allowed me to witness the healing effects of this exploration on those who allow me to be part of the discovery of their own creative selves.

I happened upon my creative side while battling cancer. The joy and calm I experience creating art taught me a new way to live: find your center; allow imagination to flow; shape your life with a gentle hand; step back and watch as you evolve.
