My Garden in Fabric Form

I work from a home based workshop, taking photos and inspiration from my garden and turning them into hand printed linen and cotton fabrics.

We manage our suburban garden with nature in mind. I love to record and monitor the seasons in sketch and print, noting any new visitors or changes in habit.

We also love to walk in local woodland and are lucky to live close to the Peak District National park, It's the first thing we do as a family whenever we have some time out.

The vivid colours of nature excite and inspire me to create my hand printed fabric. My design influences are 1930's print fabric, vintage nature guide illustrations and children's colouring books.

I use a traditional technique of block and stencil printing. I like the direct nature of lino cutting, it is so adaptable, I use small blocks so that I can combine them to create different effects to suit different products.

I started lino printing when my children were tiny and I needed to literally carve out some time for myself. Now they are at school I'm able to expand a little and I'm really enjoying the opportunity to combine working from home with family life.

Welcome to Robin's Room, hand block printed designs by Helen Darlington.

I base my lino block designs on the birds, plants and wildlife that I see around me in our garden and in the local parks when I'm out with my two little boys.

I enjoy working with my hands on a slow process and creating bold rhythmic repeat motif patterns from the natural form and colours of nature.

Care instructions

Robin's Room decorative items are block printed by hand. With this technique the design remains on the surface. This means that although the high pigment colour inks used are durable they should be cleaned with care.

The printed fabric can be washed in a machine at a low temperature preferably 30 degrees. Better for the environment and your pocket. Please use a delicate cycle and allow to dry naturally.

The best way to iron a cushion cover is to insert the pad before pressing. Cover the printed area with a clean tea towel or cotton cloth and iron over the cloth.

Herb filled sleep pillows and lavender bags should not be washed but can be sponge cleaned if soiled.
