Paying off student loans one bar of soap at a time!

Our small business is run out of Reno, Nevada. Specializing in unique artisan handmade soaps, Helicase Soapery creates products that are just as effective as they are beautiful. A decorative piece of art you can wash with! Our shop features beautiful bars of soap to enhance the look of your sink and shower, including drink-inspired high-top bars, cupcake inspired bars, as well as simpler, refined low-top bars. All bars feature high quality oils, fragrances and colorants.

Our company strives to be as ethical as possible. This means we use only sustainable palm-oil, when applicable, and also offer palm-free options. We recycle all packaging from our shipments, all our ingredients are vegan, we use only biodegradable glitters, and all our packaging is biodegradable. Your soaps are NOT wrapped in plastic! They are wrapped in plant-based cellophane with cellophane tape. Unfortunately, we're not perfect...we made the mistake of using non-biodegradable stickers and ribbons, and will be using these until they're gone and switching to plant-based, bio-degradable alternatives. And lastly, in order to ship these products to you in an affordable and timely fashion, USPS requires the use of plastic bubble mailers. Until I figure out a better solution, I highly encourage you to add this 100% recyclable packaging to your plastic bag recycling and deposit it at an appropriate facility, which includes most grocery stores, Walmart, Kohls, etc. You can find your local plastic film recycling drop-off here: https://www.plasticfilmrecycling.org/recycling-bags-and-wraps/find-drop-off-location

  • Eryn Slankster

    Owner

I am currently a freelance scientist doing part time contract work for PCRM. I spent 4 years as a postdoc at UNR, with a BS, MS, and PhD from Oakland University in Michigan, and I'm using this business to help pay off student loans.

  • David

    Assistant

David deserves so much more credit than "assistant." Supportive of the Helicase Soapery aspirations, he lends a hand for business to run smoothly, builds and accommodates necessary equipment , and washes more dishes than I care to count.

Frequently asked questions

Care instructions

Your bars will last longer if allowed to dry between uses. We recommend using a soap lift to keep your bar from resting in water in the shower and on your sink!

Custom and personalized orders

I would love to offer special requests, but cold-process soap takes 4-6 weeks to cure; I simply could not make you a custom order in less time than that. However, if you have ideas you would love to see in our shop, I would love to hear them. Please do not hesitate to contact us!

Why are you named after an Enzyme that separates DNA strands?

While contemplating our inevitable failures as scientists, my colleges and I fantasized of our "Plan B." While calculating how much further ahead financially I would be with 13 years of stripper salary (I'm not mocking... I appreciate your capitalistic decisions) instead of minimum wage and a $120,000 piece of paper to call myself "Dr. Slankster," I proclaimed that my stripper name would be "Dr. Helicase." (The joke: If I were an enzyme, I’d be DNA helicase so I could unzip your genes.)

This name stuck around for the last couple years, where every failed experiment was punctuated with bad joke about bringing out Dr. Helicase. Therefore, "Helicase Soapery" was the obvious name for my "Plan B," my "alter ego," my "side gig."

Returns/Refunds

Due to the nature of the product, I cannot offer returns. However if you have a problem, please, please PLEASE do not hesitate to contact me.
