What the heck's a hex sign?

I made my first hex sign for my PA-Dutch born mom. Its been 8 years of discovery and lots of work! I love sharing this American folk art form that I’ve interpreted and regenerate. Hex signs to me are mysterious, potent, universal, and unique. My signs are made of 1/4” wood, primer, paint, and exterior varnish.

Some history: Hex signs first appeared in Pennsylvania around 1850 when settlers began painting circular designs on their barns, but their popularity grew steadily across the United States during the 20th century. Their unique designs include symbols which are thought to bring protection and good fortune.

Here are many of the symbols I use and their meanings:
Compass Rose ~ clear navigation
Diamonds ~ healing & well being
Two Birds ~ love & harmony
Rosette ~ friendship & welcoming vibes
Sun ~ energy & fertility
Moon ~ mysterious power
Stars ~ universal blessings
Scallop edging ~ smooth sailing
