About

Woodcarver found his niche early on

A young boy with a new pocketknife is motoring down the road with his uncle. They see an elderly Native American gentleman manning a booth on the side of the road selling woodcarved figurines. They pull off onto the shoulder and get out. Bursting with curiosity, the boy asks the man how he managed to carve the horses. The elderly man answers in an Old West version of Michelangelo’s famous words: “I just cut away everything that doesn’t look like a horse.”

George Hummel’s story of how he got started in woodworking as a boy in Arizona some 70 years ago has the charm and cadence of a tall tale. But the (now 84 year old) Conifer resident told the story in his shop, surrounded by decades of his work.
It’s clear that once Hummel started whittling, he just never stopped. He prefers working with wood over bronze or clay because, if you make a mistake, you can fix it. With wood, there’s a finality — you can’t uncut it.

“I like working with wood, mainly because it’s kind of a living organism. … At one point in time it was alive,” Hummel said. “The grain … pretty much tells you what you’re going to do with it.”
