Bringing new life to traditional Japanese clothing

Koukichi is currently located in downtown Kumamoto, but our story starts in the neighboring city of Kikuchi. My shop started as a dyehouse located within a temple in Kikuchi. Due to a fire a long time ago during which records of the shop were lost, I don't know exactly when the shop first opened, but I can estimate that it was in the mid- to late-1800s. I'm the ninth generation owner.

Around the turn of the 20th century, the third generation owner, Sakuzaemon, expanded the business and began yuzen dyeing, a style of dyeing featuring intricate, hand-drawn patterns and designs. He also supported the arts by opening a school for painting called the Murata Etenarai Juku.

Interest in art still runs strong in my family, as my nephew is famed manga artist Yusuke Murata, and my eldest son does work in oil painting.

The city of Kikuchi had a long history of silk production, meaning there was a demand for dyeing, and the fourth through sixth generations of my shop focused mainly on silk dyeing. My grandfather, the seventh generation owner, studied dyeing in Kyoto and introduced those techniques into the products at the shop. My father unfortunately passed away at an early age, and so my mother took over and began selling dyed fabrics and clothing from Kyoto.

After WWII, silk production in Kikuchi decreased sharply and demand for dyeing fell as well. As such, when I became owner, I moved the shop from Kikuchi to Kumamoto and renamed it Koukichi (こう吉). I also focused the business on selling traditional Japanese clothing and accessories, as well as used kimono.

We now have two stores in Kumamoto City, Japan.

HITOIKI is the new brand name for original products made at Koukichi.

DUE TO CORONAVIRUS, SHIPPING METHOD IS DIFFERENT FOR EACH COUNTRY. We used to ship only via EMS, but due to coronavirus, some countries are unable to receive EMS packages, so we use Yamato International or sea mail. If you have any questions, please ask.

**Shipping policy: We ship everything via speedy and reliable EMS mail, which usually takes about 3 to 4 days to arrive. Kimono, etc., can be fairly heavy, and due to EMS pricing, we are unable to offer shipping discounts for multiple items purchased together. Thank you for your understanding and enjoy the kimono!

**CUSTOMERS IN FRANCE: EMS packages may be charged at high rates by Chronopost, so we use SAL for all orders to France. It takes a little longer, but customs are a lot cheaper.
**APO ADDRESSES: Orders for APO addresses will automatically be shipped via SAL instead of EMS. EMS delivery is unavailable for APO addresses.

My order was unable to be delivered to the address I provided and now the package is being returned to sender. Can I have a refund?

If you provided the wrong address, were unable to receive the package before it was returned to us, refuse to accept the package due to customs duties, or for any other reason were receive your order except in cases where we made a mistake in writing your address, we will refund you the amount of your order minus shipping to the buyer and any taxes or return shipping charges we have to pay in order to receive the undelivered order. Refund will be made only after the order has arrived back here with us.
