Hoban Press - A Tiny Letterpress Printing Shop

We are Evan, Ben and Claire; three printmakers in a tiny letterpress shop providing affordable, beautifully designed calling cards and stationery. Our philosophy is simple: high quality, personalized letterpress printed cards shouldn’t cost half a paycheck! To that end, we offer an array of beautiful letterpress printed cards that won’t break the bank. We specialize in simple calling cards, business cards and stationery. Every card is individually hand fed into an antique letterpress and printed on 100% cotton (tree free!) paper. Our cards get noticed instantly for their thoughtful typography, crisp letterpress impression, and elegant paper. Our customers tell us these tiny pieces of art are instant conversation starters and the perfect way to commemorate a noteworthy personal interaction.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to print my cards? Do you have a rush option?

Our estimated turnaround time for printing your cards and placing them in the mail is 2 to 3 weeks, once the order is placed and paid for.

We know that sometimes a card is needed for a special event like a birthday or art show. If you need your cards sooner than our usual turnaround time, we can often accommodate you, just message us and we'll see what we can do! We also have a $30 rush fee for much quicker turnaround times, if needed.

Can I see a digital proof of my card before it's printed?

Yes! You can request a free pdf proof when you place your order. Just add a note to let us know that you’d like to see a proof and we'll be sure to send you one before we make your printing plate. This is a good idea if you want to double check for typos or request changes as needed. Requesting a proof is totally free but can add several days or more to production time, particularly if multiple revisions are needed.

Can I order more later?

Of course! We keep your unique printing plate handy in the shop and offer a 20% discount on all reorders using the same plate. Message us when you’re ready for another round of cards and we’ll set up a discounted listing for you!

Can I change the ink color on my cards?

Yes! We offer the following ink colors for no extra charge: black, medium gray, medium blue, navy blue, dark green and dark brown/gold. When checking out, add a note to your order if you'd like to switch to one of these colors. If you'd like us to mix a custom color, we can do that as well for a $25 custom ink color fee. Send us a message for more info!

What kind of paper do you print on?

Most of our our calling cards and notecards are printed on Neenah Cotton or Crane's Lettra. These papers are nearly identical and are both premium uncoated, 100% cotton stock made specifically for letterpress printing. They have a soft texture that takes an impression really well, which is why it’s one of our favorite papers for letterpress. The vast majority of our calling cards are on Pearl White, a lovely warm white color. We also have a few designs on Ecru, a cream.

I'd like to print my own design. Is this possible?

Yes! We love printing our pre-designed calling card layouts, but we also print many fully custom jobs as well. Message us directly for a quote on a custom job. Let us know how many cards you'd like (common quantities are 100, 200, 250, 500 and 1000), and how many colors will be printed on each side of the card and we'll get back to you with an estimate.

Can I add my own custom logo to a calling card?

Absolutely! Any of our calling card designs can incorporate a single color, print ready, custom logo. Keep in mind that letterpress does have some limitations. We aren't able to print full color, gradients, photographs, hairlines, or flood printing (large areas of solid ink color will appear sandy or mottled). Simple line art and text based logos are ideal for letterpress. To use your logo, we'll need a vector based file such as an EPS, AI, or vector based PDF. Please include all fonts or convert them to outlines. Still have questions? Send us a message and we'll be happy to help you out!

Do you accept returns or exchanges?

Due to the custom nature of our calling cards and stationery, we are unable to accept returns or exchanges. However, if there is a problem with your order, please send us a message and we'll address it right away on a case by case basis. We take pride in our customer service and will work hard to make sure you are completely happy with your order! We will print your card exactly as you enter your information when placing your order so make sure everything is correct. When you place your order, you may request that we send you a free pdf proof before we make your plate and print your cards. This way, you can approve the exact layout and triple check for typos before we print.
