About

Holy Land Designs GT Fair Trade Workshop Changing Lives

Holy Land Designs GT fair trade workshop is an outreach to the physically disabled and underprivileged in Amman, Jordan. In 1998, a young village woman named Nancy, the ninth of 11 children whose thirst for education pushed her beyond the strictures of her society to plead for any kind of job that would give her the chance to study. Picture a bolt of fabric, a simple sewing machine on a bamboo floor mat, and the emergence of 90 brightly colored camel saddlebags.

Now picture a man named Peter, anxious to feed his five children. Picture a small stool, a saw blade spinning at top speed, and 90 blocks of olive wood soon become a herd of camels. Add the hopes, faith, and prayers of those who believe that EVERY person matters, and a retired American school teacher who had the gumption to declare, “I’ll help you sell that herd of camels!” and you have the beginning of Holy Land Designs GT.
Many years and thousands of camels later, Holy Land Designs GT fair trade workshop has grown from its first temporary quarters on a small glassed-in front porch to a three-floor building. Each morning, its large, unique “family” comes together crutches propped against the wall and hands signing away in rapid “conversation,” eager to catch up on news and start the day.

Currently, our fair trade workshop trains and employs over 20 full-time workers, many of whom are deaf or physically challenged. When they came to us, most of them had never had a job, had no skills, to contribute to their family’s welfare, and were isolated in their villages because of the limitations of their disabilities.
Fortunately, becoming part of the Holy Land Designs GT family has placed in the workers’ hands a tangible reality to accompany that first early hope. Possessing new skills and the budding confidence that accompanies hope realized, these young men and women actually stand taller, with smiles on their faces and a brightness in their eyes. Their situations have shifted drastically. No longer isolated and untrained, these same individuals have moved into respected and strategic roles among their relatives and tribes, and some are now the sole supporters of their entire families.
Because Holy Land Designs GT fair trade workshop cares about the development of the whole person, we are always looking for ways to say, “Who you are matters, not just what you do.” We have been blessed with a string of volunteers who offer free lessons to the workers in such areas as English language, child growth and development, cooking, nutrition and health, etc.

Thanks to our many volunteers who graciously donate their time and multitude of talents, all proceeds from the sale of the products can be funneled back into the further development of the workshop. In addition to supporting the workshop’s projects for physically challenged and underprivileged Jordanians, this income also enables Holy Land Designs GT to operate according to fair trade practice and offer a living wage.
We greatly appreciate your interest in Holy Land Designs GT. Each purchase of one of our handcrafted items – from olive wood ornaments and delicately-carved shepherds makes a difference in helping others help themselves. We are truly grateful! Please tell your friends about us!
