Hey, there! Brittany here. I live and love in the foothills of North Carolina, where I create out of my home studio.
I’m a long-time poet who has found great solace in the wordless endeavor of leather working. Everything I’ve made is an echo of something in nature that is already finished. I’ve found a lot of rest — and challenge — in the necessity of paying attention to what the leather already is, while considering the visual stories it can echo.
All of my leather is sourced from folks I like to call “leather rescuers.” In other words, shops that keep leather from being thrown into a landfill. There is an incredible amount of waste in the leather industry (roughly 40% annually), with so many beautiful pieces considered “unusable.” I purchase these pieces locally and enjoy the possibilities each one carries.
Each color and texture of the leather I find reminds me of a place I’ve been — or long to go. :) I’ve always wanted to have the job of the person who names paint and crayon colors, so I’ve enjoyed naming the leather shades in my studio. There’s a hue that’s the exact color of a river in Montana that I affectionately call “Glacier Jade.” There are blues that echo the grottos in Italy as well as the layers of the Blue Ridge Mountains nearby. I call those “Grotto Blues” or “Parkway Hues. ” The most delicious rust-orange makes for an incredible sun-shade that I can’t find a name for yet. ;) Nevertheless, I love how it harmonizes with all the blues, jades and browns I’m prone to collecting.
