About

An Early Passion for the "lost arts"

When I was in 6th grade our end of the year field trip was a visit to Spring Mill State Park. That was my first remembrance of the passion I would carry with me forever. At the park were the beautiful original settler's cabins, fully furnished even with big barn looms and spinning wheels, the first I'd seen or those unusual things. I didn't grow up with them, I started knitting at a very early age, and then onto crocheting. I remember my grandmother cutting out dresses for herself using brown paper bags that she had made her own patterns out of. My grandmothers, aunts and mother were all quilters, so I came from a long line of fiber artists....just none of them were spinners or weavers.

About 25 years ago, I purchased my first loom a Union 36 Floor loom, an antique. I learned how to weave about 5 years later and love it. The only thing left to do now was learn to spin yarn. How do you start spinning...you buy a herd of alpacas. We researched and now have 14 alpacas with which I spin yarns in our farm house studio to sell here in our Etsy store and in our farm store. I now have 3 spinning wheels, and 2 looms in our home with enough parts parts to make 4 more in our barn loft, so you see it is a passion.

Although I do not know a lot of my families genealogy, since our heritage was Irish/Scottish/Wales, I'll bet that we raised sheep and did spin the yarn and weave fabric from them.

I began my fiber arts passion at about 8 years old, I loved all the fiber arts. Upon visiting Spring Mill State Park when I was in the 6th grade and seeing the huge barn looms and spinning wheels I fell in love even more with the lost arts

I cannot create everything from Alpaca, but this is an excellent product that is Hand-Made in the USA.

Hoosier Heartland Alpacas is a small farm in beautiful south Central Indiana and we are dedicated to raising fine fleeced Suri Alpaca in lovely natural colors. My husband and I shear once a year using a shearing table, which is very gentle. The fiber is hand picked, sorted and then washed and carded, then spun. I also hand dye, spin, knit, crochet and felt luxurious items from the fiber.
