This is the sketch I prepared for my client to visualize the painting; a pencil sketch I scanned and applied digital color to.

About

As a little girl. every notebook I had was filled with drawings of animals and unicorns in the margins. It seemed inevitable that I would be an artist

But after receiving my BFA in Illustration from Syracuse University, I took an unexpected life journey, and spent the next 25 years creating award-winning advertising and graphic design projects. Those things kept me pretty busy, and for a long time my easel sat empty.

Then one day I realized just how much I missed painting, and started again. And realized that this was something I just had to do.

My focus has been on painting portraits of both animals and people. I feel that there is no landscape more intriguing than that of the face, and my work in this area is a continuous search to capture the individualism of my subjects.

A deep love of animals has lead me to create a series of works that depict the loving spirit and sensitivity of the animals we call pets. With every subject I paint, I want to discover that animal's unique personality and capture it. There's nothing I love more than catching the soft soulful look of a dog's eyes or the delicacy of fur. When I paint, I'm simply happy. And I hope that my work, brings that same happiness to others.

I get the pleasure of creating paintings that will be a valued keepsake of a beloved family member or pet for years to come. What could be better?

Growing up, I was rarely without a pencil in my hand. The margins in my schoolbooks were covered with drawings of unicorns and puppies. Now I paint pets for the people who love them.

Additional policies and FAQs
FAQS FOR CUSTOM PORTRAITS:

What is the process?

Start by emailing or convoing me about what the subject will be, any specific considerations or preferences for color.

After that, you will need to send me your photo or photos by email. Even if there is one specific photo you want me to match, it is best if you send me several photos in case there are other details that I need to see. Send as many photos as you like. It is important that I am able to see details clearly so so please send the largest jpg. file possible. You should email your photos to etsy [!at] hopelaneart.com. Then we can discuss your project in detail once I have an opportunity to review your photos.

Then add the listing to your Etsy cart and checkout.

Once payment is received, I will prepare a rough sketch and send it to you by email for approval. You may either approve it or make comments, and I will revise it. I will make up to 2 revisions. It is important that you are happy with, and approve the sketch before I proceed to painting.

After the painting is completed, I will email you a photo of it prior to shipping to make sure you are happy with it.

Because of the differences in monitors and printers, there may be some color variation from what you see on your monitor to what I send. This is unavoidable although I will do my best to make the image accurate.

What if I don't have the perfect photo?

Because I am an artist, I can work from several photos to create the final image that you want. I can combine the best features from several shots to make a great final image. That is why the best way to start is with you sending me several photos.

The best photos to work from are taken outdoors in natural light on a bright but slightly overcast day, or indoors near a large window. The sun or any light source, should be behind you, and you should avoid having a light source behind your pet. Please avoid using a flash. It tends to create very artificial lighting that can make an ugly painting. However if your very favorite photo of your pet was taken with a flash, send it to me, and let me see if I can work with it.

If possible, try to take or select photos that are taken at the same height as your pet instead of above or below them. That means getting down on the floor (or up on the bed) with them--and if you can't do that, try to pick up your pet and put them on the same level as you. Don't try this with a big dog though! Try to get as close as you can to your pet, but avoid cutting off their ears or too much of their bodies if it is to be a full body portrait. Photos need to be clear and sharp.

Can I have more than one pet or person in a painting?

The pricing shown is for a a single subject on a simple background. There is an upcharge for multiple subjects in the same painting. The minimum size for a painting with 2 subjects is 11 x 14". I can usually combine multiple photos into one painting--I can determine this once I see your photos.

Can I reproduce the art you send me?

No. Please note that the images of my art are protected by copyright law. Any reproduction or copying of an image is illegal. This copyright will not transfer with the sale of the work.

Under current copyright law, a work is automatically protected when it is created.

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

Here's how to commission your pet portrait:

1. Start by sending me several photographs of your pet and telling me about them. If you have a specific image you want me to base the painting on, please indicate which one it is. Digital images should be of good quality and clear, and may be attached to a convo or emailed to me.

2. I will email you a sketch of your portrait for your approval.

3. If you want revisions, I will revise it up to two times.

4. Once approved by you, I will complete the painting.

5. I will then email you a photo of the finished art for your approval.

6. Once you approve the photo, I will ship it to you within 3 days.

Deposits on Custom Work

Depending on the price of the painting, its complexity and the work I already have in progress, you may commission custom work with a non-refundable 50% deposit and pay the balance upon approving a photo of the finished art prior to shipping. Please ask about details.

Gifts

When commissioning paintings as gifts for another person, there are several options:

If you have good photos to work from:

1. commission the entire painting up front and give the completed art as a gift.
2. Have the sketch for the painting created. I will then send you a print of the pencil sketch with digital color applied to present as a gift on the occassion. This allows the recipient to provide their input prior to receiving a finished painting later. Please note: there is an additional charge of $6 to ship sketch.

If you do not have good photos:
3. Purchase a gift certificate to give and the recipient will work with me directly.
