About HopelessThrifter
I have loved fashion since I was a little kid and after a long obsession, I ended up majoring in fashion for college. I studied in New York and Milan and loved school! I've always been very into making clothes and in love with fabrics.
However, I became disenchanted with the mainstream fashion industry shortly after graduating, once I started to really pay attention to working conditions for the people making the clothes.
All people deserve windows, breaks, reasonable hours, a living wage and safe working conditions!
We took care of all that, here in the 'states after the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire way back in 1911. But most of the clothing we wear is made overseas where the labor laws are way more lax. People work in terrible conditions. It's out of sight, out of mind, and most of us ignore it, because we love a good bargain. I tried pretty hard to ignore it myself!
For many years I felt guilty whenever I bought something new, until I finally decided that I couldn't in good conscience be giving my money to companies that mistreat their fellow human beings.
Since I've always loved the thrill of the hunt at thrift shops, I switched to thrifting nearly all of my clothing in the past few years. If i do buy a new piece of clothing, I make sure that it was ethically produced.
I have been traveling around North America for the past 2 years in a mint green converted school bus named Sally with my boyfriend, and collecting lovely thrifted things here and there.
Since I travel by bus, I end up discovering so many awesome clothes and accessories in all the nooks and crannies of North America. The in between towns and cities have a plethora of amazingness!
I decided I would share the wealth and combine my love of thrifting and making. Thus was born Hopeless Thrifter!
Some garments are amazing vintage pieces that stand on their own, and some are my own creations (reworked) by myself in my tiny school bus workshop.
I love all that is colorful, quirky, and fun and I'm definitely a sucker for cool prints and burnout velvet!
