About

As long as horses have been shod with metal shoes, people have made useful and artful objects from the worn and otherwise to-be-discarded shoes. Since old shoes come in a variety of shapes and sizes (not to mention conditions), the opportunities for creativity are practically unlimited. The easy availability of horseshoes provided the raw material for developing my interest in metalworking. Here you will find objects that I've made over the years. Several are original designs while many borrow from time-honored concepts that you can find practically anywhere. Hopefully you will enjoy looking at them and perhaps decide to buy one.

The used shoe bears the marks of its history, much like the grain in wood. To preserve this all shoes are cleaned mechanically using primarily wire brushes. (In contrast to rust removal by chemical cleaning, this produces the best patina.) When finished the entire piece is coated with a coat of clear satin polyurethane. This produces a pleasing, durable finish that, if desired, can always be covered with paint. I emphasize quality and care in fabrication. Fabrication is by me alone in my home workshop and, for forged items, at a local smithy. Recently I have added items made from used railroad spikes since, like horseshoes, they have a certain rustic character and style suited for making useful objects that are also a pleasure to see. You can see my methods of fabrication in the shop video here, and pieces I've made over the years at my website (see link below).
Thanks for taking time to visit my Etsy shop. Comments and suggestions are most welcome.
