About

About Horsing Around Soap

I started Horsing Around Soap a few months after making my first batch of soap. It was not something I had planned, but a hobby turned passion. You might compare this to how quickly we fall head over heels in love with our horses, who win us over with their gentle soft eye and sweet nicker greeting.

I’m an engineer. I went to college for Computer Science and Mathematics. That means, I'm a geek, I'll admit. I'm also an equestrian. I started riding as a child, competed in horse shows, actively participated in Pony Club and have owned horses for years. Not so geek after all.

Ever since I was a child, I have loved soap, especially the fancy soap that my Mom would buy me. I remember admiring the pretty packaging, holding it in my hands, smelling that soap over and over and then squirreling it away since it was too precious to use. Have you ever stashed soap in a linen drawer? I wanted to learn how to make handmade soap one day.

As an equestrian, I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. If you hang around a barn, there's no avoiding it, right? Being a horse owner translates into lot of hand-washing. That routine was taking a toll on my skin, in the form of cracking and splitting fingers. I needed to solve this problem. Why? Because I'm an engineer and in it's in my nature! My solution: it was time to create my own handmade soap!

I knew that the soap had to use wholesome ingredients which I could pronounce and it had be kind to my delicate skin. It had to be something special.

Everything changed in 2012 when I stirred up my first small batch of cold-process soap. Yeah, I made soap, from scratch. (Look Mom, no hands!) I was hooked! I was drawn to the art and science of soap making. I recorded notes about each batch. I learned from the unusable soap. I celebrated successes, studied ingredients and formulated natural recipes. Shortly thereafter Horsing Around Soap was born.

My Mom passed long before that first batch of soap was poured. I know she is in Heaven cheering me on.

I have donated bars of soap along the way to various homeless and domestic-violence shelters. I believe in supporting our local animal shelter. I've given bars to family and friends. And I created a line of natural castile saddle soap that would be kind to my skin while rocking the clean into my saddle and tack.

I’ll always be an engineer and an equestrian. But as a soapmaker, I am able to help you by offering good quality natural products which lets you not only pamper yourself, but take better care of your skin. And as a bonus, we both get to “do good” at the same time.

Barn chores call. It's time to wash my hands again.
