About

Who knew paper had teeth?

Actually it doesn't, but paper does have tooth, which refers to its texture, but more on that later! In the beginning, I struggled to find a medium that expressed who I was. There were so many artists who knew their calling and loved and worked in a medium that loved and worked for them. In the last couple of years of college I had not found this medium. In books and galleries, watercolor was the medium of choice for lovers of pastel-colored flowers and expansive skies. I knew I was going to hate that class. I took it because there was nothing left. Now I regret never finding it sooner. From the first class, when the instructor struck the water-soaked brush onto a sheet of Aquarelle paper, I fell in love. I was ashamed I had judged it so harshly.

Watercolor was the excitement, anticipation, the magic of mediums. It had a mind and it lived free if you let it. The paper partnered with it and danced before my eyes. I can't imagine how I ever created without it before. I intend to share my discoveries of this medium here. My shop HotPressed is a play on words. It both refers to a type of paper and to my burning need to create freely. While I am partial to the super smooth texture of hot-pressed paper, I love and enjoy the textures of cold-pressed and rough as well. Though nothing compares to the mustang of papers, Yupo!

I hope to fill my shop with my travels through imagination and study. For this reason I will have predominantly small pieces that eventually will inform larger work which may be available on my website. I hope you enjoy what I have to offer.

Welcome to Hot Pressed! Here you will find original works on paper by Johnny Perez. My mediums include watercolor, ink, and pencil on various fine art papers. While I plan to have many finished works available, my hope is to provide a journey of my artistic process, and so I will have mostly works of study and various oddities I dream up!
