It's been 12 years since I took my first metalsmithing class. That led to studying for and earning a Gemologist designation from GIA. The jewelry industry is a great place to meet nice people. I met the owner of a fine jewelry store at one of my GIA classes and worked for her doing appraisals, accounting and social media for about 3 years. This experience was critical to my future success because the owner and bench jeweler taught me a lot about retail and repairs.
With the encouragement of my girlfriends, I brought Hot Rox Custom Jewelry to Etsy in 2010. As the premier online presence of handmade jewelry, Etsy turned out to be the perfect home for my OOAK designs. It is also a great marketing platform - the teams and tools available to sellers are here - the more you work it, the more exposure you bring to your shop. Now, I buy holiday gifts, gemstones, handbags, dog collars and clothing from Etsy sellers. It's important to support the community.
From the beginning, Hot Rox has made a monthly donation to local dog rescue organization, Our House of Hope K-9 Rescue in Gurnee, Illinois. As my business grows, the donations are larger and more dogs are being rehabilitated. To date, we've raised over $15,000.
Frequently, I look at a stone and immediately envision what I want to do with it. That turquoise would make a great statement ring. I'd like to bezel set that fantasy cut tourmaline in gold for a pendant. Those aquamarine spheres need to be earrings! Sometimes I sketch and labor over the details - other times, I wing it. I'm an artist - it depends upon my mood.
I tend to be inspired by what I would like- natural gems, like rose cut diamonds, raw diamonds, saturated tourmaline, opaque sapphires - bezel set into precious metal. Comfortable studs, funky ear wires and big hoops and LONNNNGGGG necklaces.
I love the the pure white color of silver metal but I also like blackening it for contrast against yellow gold and light stones. I was experimenting with mixed metals and created a wide hammered band combining yellow gold and sterling silver. Oxidation with liver of sulphur turned the silver areas a pleasing combination of blue and golden red. Demand for this design led to other related styles - and finally to my newest store, RusticFORMen where the focus is mens bands. Rustic offers mens wedding bands in a variety of rugged styles in both gold, silver and combinations. Of course, all of these rings can be worn by women, too, and are appropriate for fashion in addition to marriage.

Social Media Marketing, Customer Service
I am an animal lover and jewelry fanatic, and handle all of the marketing, customer service, and social media exposure for Hot Rox Custom Jewelry.
Cornerstone to my business is my monthly donation to Our House of Hope K-9 Rescue in Gurnee, Illinois. Since 2011, Etsy sales have generated over $17,000! I urge you to check out their website if you are thinking about enriching your life with a dog.
Much of my work is in inventory and ready to ship. Please allow 1-2 business days.
Wedding bands are considered a custom order and I cannot issue a refund for rings ordered in the wrong size. I am happy to provide photos for any custom design so you can approve the work before it ships. Please convo me if you want to see a photo OR tell me in the Notes to Seller box during checkout.
I make each band after you place your order. I do not have an inventory of different sizes for my designs so I cannot easily make exchanges or refunds. If you feel that the ring you received does not look like the photograph in the listing, please contact me so we can come to a mutually acceptable solution.
Once again, I cannot issue a refund for custom rings ordered in the wrong size. I also do not re-size rings.
I take custom orders and am happy to give you a rough estimate if you convo me with your request. Please bear in mind that time spent on research, convos, design, photographs etc. play a part in the overall cost. Other factors are:
RISING PRICE OF MATERIAL In many cases, I've purchased gemstones and gold or silver back when the price was considerably lower than today. Jewelry made with in stock materials bought 3-4 years ago will be lower in price than the same piece being made with materials procured today.
OLD INVENTORY If a piece is not getting a lot of attention, I will reduce the price over time to try and move it out of inventory. Unfortunately, I cannot make a version of a discounted piece for the same price.
SHIPPING and OTHER COSTS If I have to purchase metal or gems for a custom piece, I usually have to buy more than what is needed for one project and pay for priority international shipping.
TIME spent on estimates, design, sketch and photography, locating materials and convos will be reflected in the cost of a custom piece.
The project needs to be defined, i.e., type of design, materials, budget. Then, I will work up an estimate. If necessary, I will take photos or do a sketch. Once that price and piece are agreed upon, customer pays at least 50% up front, with the final payment due before the piece is shipped.

LAYAWAY - Convo me if you would like to pay for an item installments. I require 30% down and the balance paid within 90 days. Should you change your mind, I keep the 30% down payment.
I CANNOT issue a refund for rings ordered in the wrong size. I do not re-size rings.
IN STOCK - SHIP IN 1 OR 2 BUSINESS DAYS.
CUSTOM - PLEASE ALLOW 5 WEEKS PRODUCTION TIME. If I can accommodate a RUSH order, a fee of $75 will apply. Please convo me before ordering to see if I can complete your order in the timeframe needed.
SHIPPING WITHIN USA - I use the United State Post Office (USPS) and ship First Class with tracking to the USA. Delivery time is 2-4 days in the Continental US. Priority* and Priority Express are available for additional fees of $5 and $20 respectively. You should be able to upgrade your shipping during the checkout process. Contact us if you have problems or need assistance.
Hot Rox uses the United States Post Office (USPS) for shipping and will provide you with a tracking number for your package. If your package is delayed, lost or stolen, please contact the USPS using your tracking number for identification. USPS.com has guidelines for all situations on their website. We are happy to provide you with a receipt if needed but we do not have the manpower to investigate situations of lost, delayed or stolen packages.
*USPS Priority shipping includes $50 insurance. Additional insurance is available for a fee and you will be offered to upgrade to $300 during the checkout process. Contact us if you need more insurance or have questions.
OUTSIDE USA/INTERNATIONAL - As of August 10, 2016, we no longer ship to most countries as our business cannot withstand the loss of time and money expended on customers who hold us responsible for customs delays, VAT and import taxes and even their own negligence at not picking up their package at the local post office. Currently, we ship to USA, Australia and Canada.
Your international package will ship Priority International (6-10 business days), unless you prefer Registered Mail or Priority Express (3-5 business days). This upgraded option is offered during checkout.
Customs regulations in many countries stipulate that coins, precious metals and jewelry from the USA must be mailed via Registered Mail. Registered mail costs more and takes longer (3- 4 weeks) but is the safest way to mail international packages. Contact us if you want your package to ship Registered Mail as this is not an option during the checkout process.
International orders will need a telephone number prior to shipping. If you do not include this in the Notes to Seller box during checkout, we will contact you after your purchase. In some countries, your package will be held at your local post office until you pick it up in person after paying VAT and/or import taxes.
I am not an expert import tax policies of individual countries. Please research the laws of your country regarding imports from the USA so you can anticipate taxes and regulations. Hot Rox Custom Jewelry is not responsible for paying the duty or taxes on packages shipped to our customers.
This link provides some relevant information regarding VAT and import taxes - This link has some useful information about import taxes and VAT - http://www.dutycalculator.com/dc/145728/bags-footwear-watches-accessories/watches-jewellery/jewellery-of-gold/import-duty-rate-for-importing-jewelry-from-italy-to-united-kingdom-is-4/
If the tracking on your package states that the status is “Delivered” and you have not received it, it is likely at your local post office. Please call them - not us. Likely, they are holding your package until VAT is paid. We are not responsible for paying any duty, taxes, VAT or fees. Please be prepared by finding out what the laws are in your country before making a purchase.
When an international package is slow in arriving, it is usually DELAYED in CUSTOMS. Unfortunately, we at Hot Rox do not have a magic wand to locate your package or predict how long it will be in customs. Our resources are the same as yours - we suggest you use the Internet to locate the telephone numbers of your local post and/or customs office and follow up with them. Your tracking number will have letters at the beginning and the end. This number is used by Customs and the USPS for identification. It is the Customs number.

Your ring was made for you after you placed your order. I try my best to re-create the ring in the listing photograph (with any additional modifications that you might have specified). If you are not satisfied with the appearance of your ring, please contact us immediately. I want you to be happy and will do what I can, within reason, to make changes to your piece.
Custom orders (i.e. wedding bands) cannot be returned for refund or exchanged for other merchandise. Please contact me if there is a problem and I will do my best to work with you to resolve the issue.
I'm sorry but I do not re-size rings.
Additional policies and FAQs
OXIDATION - If you are worried about the oxidation wearing off, I do not recommend purchasing an oxidized ring. The oxidation WILL WEAR OFF and I cannot predict the rate at which it will do so.
Soaps and detergents will take off oxidation. Taking the ring off during hand washing, swimming, showers and sleep will help preserve the oxidation.
Every person has different body chemistry and will react to silver (and whatever alloys are in sterling silver) differently.
I coat each ring with a lacquer to help preserve the oxidized color but the oxidation will still wear off, especially if worn daily. I am using a NEW lacquer recommended by my father in law, who is a chemist. My husband will be testing several ring styles to see how it wears.
You can oxidize at home with liver of sulphur. Drop a bean sized portion in about 1 cup of hot (but not boiling) water. Then dip your ring (make sure it is clean and dry). You can hold it and watch it turn from golden brown to reddish blue to teal to gray. The texture in the rings allow for different areas to oxidize at different rates resulting in a pleasing color palette.
Antiquing or blackening liquids can be painted on your piece if you want the piece to be dark gray/black. Most of these solutions will darken both silver and gold. Please refer to the instructions or the manufacturer with questions.
I am happy to re-oxidize and re-lacquer your ring at any time - free of charge. Just convo me to let me know that you will be mailing me your ring for re-finishing.
SIZE-- I measure ring size by using where the center of the ring shank rests on the sizing mandrel. This is the standard sizing method used by bench jewelers. For bands that are 9-10mm wide, recommend ordering them 1/4 to 3/4 size larger than your normal ring size. When in doubt, go to a jewelry store and try on a 9-10mm band in your size and 1/2 size larger to see what I mean and to gauge the comfort and correctness of your size.
I do not re-size rings. Many jewelers will resize sterling silver rings and you can have your local independent jeweler re-size a ring that doesn't fit. Be sure to tell him or her that the ring has been oxidized as they will have to re-size and re-finish the entire ring.
I CANNOT issue a refund for rings ordered in the wrong size.
EUROPEAN SIZE CONVERSION - Please convert your ring size to US. There are many charts available online to do this. Examples are below.
COLOR - I do my best to recreate the oxidation color shown in my photographs. If you receive a ring and are unhappy with the oxidation color, please contact me immediately so we can discuss re-oxidation. In most cases, I do this free of charge and immediately.
Please understand that the surface of most styles is hammered, brushed and treated with droplets of gold - so, it is not flat and the oxidation colors will vary with the undulating surface.
WEAR n TEAR - Many customers order an oxidized ring for a wedding band.
Please consider the thickness of the band when choosing a ring that you will wearing daily for many years. Many styles are shown in 1.1 and 1.2mm thickness - but can be made in thicker metal. For instance, the wide bands (8.5-10mm) can be made with 1.6mm fine silver or sterling silver which is what I recommend for heavy, daily wear. For thinner styles (5-8mm), I can offer 1.5 or 2.0 mm sterling silver - once again, I recommend a thicker ring for heavy, daily wear.
I can modify any style to meet your needs so please convo me if you have a special request.
