About

Catering to Those Who Wish to Express Their Love of African Fabrics Through the Products They Interact with on a Daily Basis

I've always thought that being creative was a nice quality to have, but one that never lent itself towards any 'real' career. So I teetered around in finance, technology, and project management for over a decade. Finally, I'd had one bad boss too many and in 2014 I decided to quit everything and take a sabbatical.

I made a million plans for my time during my sabbatical but nothing excited me more than FINALLY being able to learn how to sew. I was voracious about learning everything I could. I would make something and bring it to bed to show my husband who was kind enough not to say that my obsession was nuts....

...So what's so cool about sewing? I think of sewing as functional art. Gathering materials together to make a piece of clothing or a blanket is no different from an artist assembling her paints to create a masterpiece.

I especially love sewing with African wax fabrics (Ankara) because the bold patterns and colors have so much LIFE! I seriously get happy seeing Ankara on the most mundane objects such as a decoupaged box of Kleenex.

And because I believe that everyone has at least one inexplicably unique gift they were blessed with, I've chosen to explore this love of sewing and Ankara through the House of Mami Wata! Whether this all ends up being a hobby or 'Me 2.0', I thank you in advance for coming along for the journey!!!

Care instructions

If you would like to preserve the wax in the fabric, please dry clean only. However, if you don't mind losing the wax finish, then machine wash on cold and line dry or tumble dry on low heat.

Thank you so much for your interest in this shop! For now, we are strictly an ecommerce business with no physical locations.

How Do I Remove the Adhesive Manufacturer's Labels?

The manufacturer's labels can be very annoying, but the easiest way to get them off is with a warm iron or steamer. You can check out my quick tutorial here:

What is the difference between ordering dashiki fabric by the yard versus the design panel?

Dashiki fabric ordered by the yard may or may not contain a full design panel (the full rectangular design). Yards are a standard 36" long.

Dashiki fabric order by the design panel will always contain the full rectangular design panel. If you are making some kind of clothing where pattern placement is important, then I recommend ordering by the panel which is a little smaller than a yard (usually anywhere from 31 -33"), but will give you exactly the part of the fabric that you need.

All fabric sold will always be shipped as 1 continuous piece, subject to availability. In the event continuous yardage is not available, we will contact you to give you an opportunity to cancel you order or choose a replacement fabric.

Do you accept Returns or Exchanges?

Returns and/or exchanges are only accepted in the event that the wrong item is sent or the item sent was defective.

Do you sell specific brands?

Unfortunately we sell specific patterns, not brands. While we strive to purchase fabrics from the same supplier, we are subject to the market forces of supply and demand and may have to switch suppliers when a particular pattern becomes available.

Therefore if you continuously order a particular pattern over time, you may receive a different brand from a different dye lot. Despite this, you will never receive different brands of the same pattern in a single order.

What happens to lost, stolen, or returned orders?

While rare, lost or stolen orders do happen. If your order is lost or stolen, you will need to contact the carrier to file a claim. Priority Mail carries a standard $50 insurance and additional insurance required must be purchased by the buyer.

For returned orders, you will be contacted to communicate the reason for the return. If the reason for the return is not our error, the buyer will be required to pay to re-ship the item. As we do not accept returns or cancellations, after 14 days, buyers who refuse to pay for re-shipping will be refunded for their purchase minus a 20% restocking fee.
