Our Story

hi there.
I am a scattered-brained, 35 yr old mom and wife with a semi-unhealthy addiction to paper and compulsive need to create. I graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in graphic design, concentration in photography, and passion for printmaking. House of Hazelnut has evolved into a Paperie, Design Studio and Creative Consultation Firm to allow me to expand my creative wanderings. With the help of my dedicated husband and partner, we hope to share our passion for paper with you.

how it all began.
House of Hazelnut started out when some folks in our family along with a few friends started getting married and having babies in 2006. I was a few years out of college, working at a small print shop, feeling creatively unsatisfied. The need for invitations and announcements came up and though it was a little out of my field {logo/branding/identity design} I thought it would be fun…and I was the one with the printer hook-up. Turns out, even though I worked with a lot of bands and grungy-dark graphics, I was pretty good at the frilly-light stuff and soon started picking up more and more wedding work.

Skip ahead about a year and my now-hubby and I, bought a house, got engaged and began building a studio in the attic of our home. Though he’s a musician at heart, he’d surprisingly learned quickly how to assemble my intricate creations. I had just learned of Etsy and we decided to give it a try and go into business
for ourselves.

what’s in a name?
We acquired some equipment, established some paper and embellishment vendors and I had grown a fairly large library of invitation samples. Now a name was needed. Well around this time, Kyle and I were approaching our wedding day and I had decided that I wanted to keep my last name. It’s long, no one can say it, but it’s very unique. It was a name made up by my great-great grandfather to hide their Russian heritage when they fled to Hungary during their civil war.

Upon learning of this fun family fact, I decided this was the name and House of Hazelnut was officially
in business.

I can’t say that I don’t have any process, but inspiration and ideas come from all over. A smell, a memory, a taste…or simply a request. Most custom jobs start out with a string of emails and inspiration boards being shared, whereas ideas for products or new designs come from my life and surroundings.

Custom Wedding Invitations:
If you see a design you like and would like more information, please send us an Etsy Convo. We have samples of most designs pictured as-is that you can purchase one for the cost of the listing. Custom designs are also available upon request. When you are ready to order your invitations, we will set up a custom listing for you to purchase. Once payment is received, your production time begins. We will send you a template to fill in with your customized information and send you a digital proof within 4 business days of receiving this information. Most custom sets are done 4 weeks from date of payment. A rush fee will apply if the invitations are required to be delivered sooner than 4 weeks. Rush fees will be determined upon complexity of the job and specific demand of the client. The client is also responsible for APPROVING all proofs prior to production.

Custom Printed Products:
To purchase any of our custom printed products, please let us know how many you would like to purchase and if you have any special requests. A custom listing will be set up for you and upon receipt of payment, we will send you a customization template to fill out and return. After we receive your personalized information, a digital proof will be sent back to you within 4 business days for your approval. Production of your order will begin after we receive your APPROVAL.

Custom Note cards:
Simply purchase the listing as-is. If you want more than one set of 10 cards, send us a message letting us know how many you need and we’ll set up a custom listing for you to purchase. Yes, we have been known to give quantity discounts if you order more than 3 sets of cards. Please include your personalized information that you would like on the card in the notes section at check-out. You’ll have your cards within a few days, after you APPROVE the final proofs, of course.

Digital Designs:
Ordering digital designs are simple:
1- Purchase the listing and proceed to check-out
2- Customization on our end
3- Digital proof within 2 business days
4- Approval or Request for Changes
5- Print-ready PDF sent

This step of the process is crucial. Please look over your proof carefully and with detail. Have a friend take a second look. House of Hazelnut is not responsible for errors after the proof has been approved.

Please note that whether you are ordering printed products from us or printing yourself, each monitor or devise displays colors differently. Exact color matches cannot be guaranteed. If this is a concern, we recommend purchasing a physical sample prior to placing an order.

Design and production times vary depending on your project specifics (ie., complexity of design, edits, and quantity needed). Below is a rough guideline for products sold through our Etsy Shop as well as for design and creative projects. If you are in need of something more quickly or by a specific date, please be sure to make us aware of this at the start of the project. We try our best to work within all reasonable time frames. All CUSTOM orders require approval prior to production and shipping.

Returns and exchanges
I am extremely particular with my product and the quality of my work, but more importantly I want you to be completely and totally satisfied. If for some reason you are not, please contact me within 7 days of receiving your order. Please inspect all packages IMMEDIATELY upon receipt. House of Hazelnut will not be responsible for any mis-prints or other defects after 7 days that you’ve had your order. Shipping is always non-refundable. Custom orders cannot be returned, even if their proof has been approved with an error, though I will be happy to fix the error and reprint for an additional fee. (We do NOT proofread or copy edit for you!)

Payment
We accept PayPal, Apple Pay and major credit cards for ALL items purchased through our Etsy Shop (you do not need an account to use this function, super cool).

Most transactions must be complete and paid in full, prior to shipping. Custom orders will require a 50% deposit up front and the balance to be paid prior to shipping.
Shipping
Email us for specific shipping needs. We ship our note cards and individual sample sets using USPS First Class. Invitation sets are sent via USPS Priority Mail. If you need something expedited or would like to purchase insurance, please contact me about additional shipping charges and options. The same applies for International shipping. Products will NOT ship until your order is APPROVED.

Please be sure that your Pay Pal and Etsy “Ship To” addresses match. If they do not, your product will be shipped to the address entered during your checkout on Etsy.

FILE SUBMISSIONS:

TEXT FILES containing your orders personalization information should be emailed to me in a Word Document format:

I cut and paste what you send me so that there is less chance for error. Please be sure that all of your information is spelled correctly and exactly how you would like for it to appear.

PHOTO/ART FILES should have a resolution no less than 300 dpi. If they are less than this, they will not print properly

MAILING DATA should be sent as an Excel Spreadsheet :
