Carrying History Forward
This series of Totmoc patterns was first marketed in the early 70's and over the years the designs have been handed down between friends. The pattens had sat dormant for many years until a close family friend dusted off the patterns and handed them over to me.
Growing up around these shoemaker friends I had known about Totmocs most of my life. I can still remember my visits to friends' houses seeing their moms sewing the shoes together to help with their production. After many years of production the totmoc moccasins slowly left the market as they became too labor intensive to keep up with.
These shoemakers were deeply rooted in the community I grew up in and have always been people I looked up to. It was an honor for me to be given these patterns and have the opportunity to make a business out of something that felt so close to home.
As the door opened for me I redirected my energy toward working with leather and started recreating these designs. I started production out of repurposed leather jackets and garments ( similar to the hats I previously produced) wanting to be as resourceful as possible. I quickly learned that these materials were not suitable for the quality of moccasins I wanted to make and went back to the tradition of deer and elk leather. I have learned many things along the way as I have learned to balance my own creative ideas alongside the quality and integrity of these shoes.
It is an honor for me to carry on the tradition of Totmocs. The patterns have changed slightly over the years but the moccasins you buy today are the same moccasins that have been enjoyed by mothers and children for over 40 years.
Thank you for your interest in Totmocs.
