About

Draw. Write. Create. Something I've always done for my own enjoyment. And then one day, I realized I could share it with others. This is my story...

Before I get into explaining how IcyPanther's Art Shop came to be, a proper story would start at the beginning. And opening the store was not the beginning, but rather, the first chapter...

My interest in drawing anime-style really started in the middle of eighth grade when I moved and discovered I now had cable. I would spend my afternoons watching Toonami and fell in love with Rurouni Kenshin (and had a healthy obsession of Yu Yuk Hakusho too). I so badly wanted to express my love for the show so I took to drawing (and writing -- I started in fanfiction and that launched me into my hopefully soon-to-start career in public relations or journalism... but that would be a different story!).

In high school anime style drawing isn't looked well upon in art classes (it's not "real" art I was always told) so I got really into animals, but I still continued to watch my animes (and eventually read manga) and kept sketching and sketching.

But I wanted a purpose for drawing, as I've always liked to please others and share my talents. So I found Gaia Online, where I set up an art shop (it's still in service today, if I could actually get my butt back on Gaia! It's aptly been renamed "The Tumbleweed Art Shop".) There I started taking commissions of Gaia avatars and Original Characters.

I found inspiration in many of the other artists and shops on the site, which eventually propelled me to DeviantArt. That opened up so many new styles to me and new things I wanted to try.

This is where my love of chibi art comes in. Previously, I'd been drawing in some type of anime-style, but the huge eyes and pink cheeks and just all around adorableness had me at "kawaii!" I knew I wanted to draw cute things like that too.

I went through a lot of styles, from "ChibiChibi" to "HSKT (which stood for Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes as they were more proportionate than a regular chibi would be), to "Pillow" to where I've eventually landed on "Sugar." Although to be honest, even they have undergone huge changes since I started drawing them.

My style started to become more refined in chibis -- I stopped using a "base" that I used to and started trying to get into more difficult and complex poses. I admit, I still find it challenging at times, because their heads are so darn big so there are certain things you can do with the arms and torsos, but it's been fun.

I still love to work on semi-anime style over on my DA and I make prints of some of them to take to conventions. But since my Etsy shop is all about the chibis, I'm going to get back to that. Sorry for the rambling interlude, English major, you know?

I started drawing fanart chibis freshman year of college because I had this genius idea -- I was going to make my twin sister a custom messenger bag with all her favorite characters! I drew 8 of them and printed them on print-n-press transfers and gave it to her. She absolutely loved it! ♥ I then made custom purses for two of my really good friends who also shared my love of anime.

I didn't even realize then that I'd made a product. It was just art to me.

I started drawing more fanart chibis and posting them to my DeviantArt because I loved the attention fanart got (I still think it's horribly sad that original art is so unpopular on DA unless you're famous over there). I started with One Piece and moved through my favorite shows (with a stint dedicated to NarutoxHinata anime style pieces in various styles and coloring techniques).

It actually wasn't until I graduated college in May 2011 that I had the first thought of turning my art into a product. I hadn't thought fanart could be sold, but after doing some research on licensing and whatnot, I found out my chibis were good to go!

So then it was: What do I make? I went back to my bag idea and thought iron-on chibis would be super cute! But what if people didn't want a tote bag?

I thought of magnets and bookmarks and started hand-making them. All of this was for the upcoming anime convention I was hoping to get into for April 2012: Anime Central. It was my goal and my motivation, as being jobless is very demotivating.

I got accepted into the ACEN Artist Alley in December and started branching out. I got stickers made of favorite series and then decided I wanted to make charms -- which I did by hand as printing sites were too expensive and had too many limits.

It wasn't until February actually that I found Etsy. I hadn't sold anything yet -- was just stockpiling -- and thought I'd give it a shot. The fees weren't too high and it seemed well shopped.

February was slow, but I did sell my first keychain on my second day. It was addicting, earning money for my artwork. And I kept at it, adding more products, drawing new things until here I am, now.

I will continue to add new products (miniatures ♥) and share my love of cute things with everyone here on Etsy.

Thanks for stopping by! ♥

I ask that you please contact me prior to leaving feedback if you have a problem with your item. I am more than happy to replace it or refund it and try to fix the situation. Thanks!

I am happy to make custom orders or arrangements! If you see something in my shop you like and would like tweaks (i.e., you like my charms but want them on keychains instead of phone straps, a different quote on a bookmark, etc.) please do message me and we can work out a new arrangement!

I also ask that you please contact me prior to leaving feedback if you have a problem with your item. I am more than happy to replace it or refund it and try to fix the situation. Thanks!
