My Parents Influence:
My Father was an amazing storyteller. My Mother wrote beautiful poetry. Sadly my father passed away in September 2015. My Mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2012. About

Shared Stories * Book Building and The Art of Storytelling

Greetings I'm Susan Kay, creative artist and storyteller. I specialize in vintage style handmade books that come alive with poetry, art and flowers. Gifts of love. My mission: Creating visual storybooks that correlate with your love story and memories; while leaving plenty of room for you to add mementos and journal.

My Parents Influence:
My Father was an amazing storyteller. My Mother wrote beautiful poetry. Sadly my father passed away in September 2015. My Mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2012. She no longer had the ability to control her thoughts, hold on to memories, nor write them down to share with us. Though these are devastating losses and may seem bleak to some, out of love and in their honor my line of books and cards were born.

Creative Process:
My creative process begins with a story. Something someone has told me, something I've read, heard on the radio or something I've photographed.

My Works of Art:
Are compositions of images cut, placed, layered and arranged to create visual elements which then form a design and transform into new works of art.

Intertwining the romantic elegance of the Victorian era poetry books, you’ll find my designs created in old world charm. The use of poetry, the language of flowers and words of wisdom help create my stories.

Build A Book Tool:
Build a book is a tool I use when designing handmade books for my clients. The opportunity to help in my creative process truly allows me the ability to offer one-of-a-kind keepsake treasures you won't find anywhere. With their help I've been able to envision new designs, offer new categories and new works of art. My clients have given me this wonderful opportunity and I'm truly grateful!

My Studio:
We live in the great state of Minnesota in the Midwestern United States, surrounded by the gifts of nature to the beautiful written word. Minnesota is known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes". Its name is based on the Lakota Native Indian word for sky-tinted water.

Our studio is nestled in the foothills of the Mississippi River Valley. We are surrounded by beautiful parks and long and winding bike trails … a perfect place for the soul *smiles*

What Makes Me Happy?
I LOVE the magic of Christmas * Chocolate * long walk’s with my husband * conversations with my son and grandsons * time spent with my family and friends * bird watching * curling up by the fire place with a good book * smooth jazz, new age, Celtic, blue grass, folk music * and of course playing in my studio with my art *smiles* for me … this is the good life *smiles*

Blessings:
I have been blessed to have a wonderful husband, family and great friends that are very supportive and have encouraged me to pursue my dreams, to create my works of art. I've been blessed to share those works of art my Father has graciously helped me create. How lucky can one girl be? *smiles*

Love and Peace To All,
Susan Kay and Scott Cudahy

I have not the gifts of storytelling as my Father. Nor do the poetic words come to my mind as they did with my Mother. But my Father in Heaven blessed me with gifts from both, so that I may write my own story. Poem by Susan Kay

HANDMADE BOOKS:
Time Frame:
Book design is a minimum 10 week process. This locks in your book order and sets my work schedule. It allows for communication between me and you, time for research and creating the actual book design, putting together my storyboards and sending phone images of what I've done. Folding and cutting papers to fit your book size. You'll find some books but not all with finished page corners, hand lettering, embossing and hand stamping. All my books offer works of art, book covers finished with fabric, lace or paint and embellished. Book binding is done by hand. Each book I design has its very own story to tell making them heirloom treasures to be shared with loved ones and future generations.

Care instructions

Handling: Gently hold your book with both hands. Hold it with back on smooth or covered table. Allow front cover to open then the other, holding the leaves in one hand, while you open a few leaves in the back. Then open a few leaves in front, alternately opening front and back, gently pressing open the sections until you reach the center of the volume. Do this 2 or 3 times and you will obtain the best results. Opening the book carelessly in any one place, you will likely injure or break the back binding and loosen the leaves.

HANDMADE is not perfect. Little imperfections add character and beauty.

Disclaimer:
Do not allow children to handle your book. They may have small embellishments which if pulled off can be a chocking hazard.
