About
Knick-knackery became part of my grief therapy when my mother died of cancer.
When I was a kid, my mom and her lady friends used to "go antiquing."
We lived in Central Indiana near a world-renowned flea market called Shipshewana.
Even after I finally got to go--which is a story all its own, let me tell you--it always seemed a magical place with wonders and amazements around every corner.
And, the people watching!
I still wonder about each piece, each item. Who cherished it? Who gave it to them? Why?
Had it been one of those rare gifts that hits the mark and warms both giver and getter? Or had it been freighted with emotional baggage, like a make-up gift after a big fight?
My mom and I both hated shopping for clothes and shopping at the mall, in general. But, she loved her antiquing and her eighties ladies.
Mom collected clowns and Dutch for me, she said. She collected pigs, fawns and deer, wall pockets, and starch shakers for her.
Meantime, Dad collected Lladro and crystal for her, he said.
Sometime in the last, ahem, forty years, she also picked up The China Set. That she never liked but dutifully trotted out on special occasions. I've never been certain if it was her mom's or her mom's moms.
(My grandparents eloped during the Depression and the dates of production for The China Set ran from '38 to '78. So, probably not Great Gramma H's then.)
As an only child, when my mom died, I inherited all of it.
Almost immediately.
Whereas Mom's therapy skewed towards bargain hunting and reminiscing, Dad's has always been the open road and staying busy.
That's why, just a few months after she passed, he packed it all up and pulled it 1500 miles down to me.
Not like that was overwhelming or anything.
Being surrounded by my mom's cherished treasures and her clunkers, too. Oh yeah, I know which things she liked and which things she kept out of obligation. I probably won't tell you that in the product descriptions, though.
I'm not sure if it was upbringing or Mom's spirit itself or Divine inspiration, but I've been thrift shopping in the "Housewares" aisles since she died.
Which is to say, I've been adding to the vast numbers of Things To Be Dusted.
I didn't have the faintest notion why I was behaving this way. Who needs more stuff?
Eventually, I came to realize that I was supplementing my mom's stuff with Other People's Mom's Stuff. That cushioned the ache in my chest.
It made the pull on my heart strings something bearable. Where they had been winched taut, they found some ease.
I can sell Other People's Mom's (& Dad's) Stuff without feeling guilty or ashamed that I'm not "keeping it in the family" or that I'm "dishonoring their memory." It's just stuff.
Really lovely special stuff that has a story to tell. And a story that's not finished.
If all goes well, I might be able to sell some of My Mom's Stuff and feel okay about it.
I'm calling it "Inherited Kindnesses" -- because that's what I did.

Thank you for reading my story. You probably understand and I appreciate that, wherever you are. May you and yours be well and whole.

Hi, thanks so much for stopping by. I am my mother's daughter. Where she got through rough patches by "antiquing," I'm getting through my grief over losing her by thrift shopping. I might sell my Gramma's China here someday, too. Love, Suzanne

Payment
Items will not be shipped until confirmation of the payment has been received.
Sales tax of 8.25% will be added to all orders shipped to Texas addresses.
Shipping
I ship via USPS. I insure shipments over $50.
Heavy and oversized items generally ship via FedEx Ground. The bigger and heavier the item, and the farther you live from Texas, the more likely your item is to ship via FedEx Ground.
Items over $50 will require a signature for delivery.
If you're shipping to Hawaii, Alaska, or international, please convo me and we'll figure it out.
If you have a specific date by which you need an item, or would like overnight shipment, please contact me and I will get you a rate. The USPS gives *guidelines* for delivery times for Priority Mail, but these are only guidelines and not guarantees. Similarly, FedEx Ground (which I often use for larger packages) travels by truck, so is susceptible to weather delays.
When you make your purchase, you agree to pay the listed shipping charge. As a courtesy, I will refund overcharges of more than $2 via Etsy or PayPal, upon request.
It is *very* difficult to estimate a shipping cost on any two items in my shop because of their disparate sizes and weights. Always feel free to be in touch with me to get a more precise quote in advance if you are considering multiple items.
International shipping:
Feel free to contact me for international shipping quotes if one is not included in the listing. I may add a handling charge of up to $5 to international orders. Delivery time is usually 2-3 weeks, but may be up to six weeks from the date of purchase, and can take up to 8-10 weeks. Refunds for delinquent packages will be considered only after 10 weeks have passed.
**International buyers will responsible for all customs and duties, and I will always declare the actual value on the customs form.**
I carefully pack your item to arrive safely. Please note that I try to re-use packing materials, clean, from a non-smoker's pet-free home. Reduce, re-use, recycle! I try to pack items to withstand the rough handling during shipment.
*IF* the worst happens and your purchase arrives damaged, please take photos of the box, packing materials and the sad, broken pieces. This will help expedite an insurance claim with the carrier. Be in touch with me right away and we will figure out the best course of action.
Refunds and Exchanges
If an item is substantially different than what I have described, I will gladly accept the return of the item and refund your money.
Returns should be initialized within 3 days of receipt (as per delivery confirmation). I generally do not offer credits or exchanges, but I will try to be flexible as much as possible.
Buyer pays return shipping charges and assumes all risk while the item is in transit (please pack carefully and insure fully). Returns will be processed only if the item is received in the same condition in which it was sent.
For both buyer and seller protection, jewelry items will be packaged and shipped in the presence of a notary and signed as such.
Additional policies and FAQs
All pieces with electrical components should be brought to a licensed electrician before use. Wiring, plugs and other elements are not guaranteed. Generally, I will sell pieces in good working condition, but it's better to be safe and have it checked out.
