Unleashing My Inner Storyteller & Doodler

Thanks for stopping by our shop and we hope you enjoy!

When I was a kid I did two things nearly 24/7: storytelling and drawing. I absolutely loved the beings and creatures that came to me and told me their tales and happily allowed me to sketch them in all their weird glory.

It seemed only fair that I then pass their stories on to the "others"; those who just didn't seem to hear or see them or if they did, choose to ignore them. Sadly, when I was in high school, I allowed one teacher’s opinion of my work discourage me and it felt like someone had ripped out my heart. I hid my Storyteller inclinations, as well as my inner Doodler from everyone (including myself) for well over twenty years. Could be longer. Math has never been my thing. Whatever. It was way too long. Through a series of mis-fortunistic events I (finally) came to my senses (sort of): Firstly to embrace this and then (finally) to unleash my Inner Doodler. Quite happily, I'm now doodling all over the place.

This is how I work: At my heart, I am a Storyteller and my characters come out in either words or doodles. All my work is hand doodled the old-fashioned way with a Manga pen and recycled paper. Manga pen? Okay, maybe not so old-fashioned! After I finish drawing, I then scan my doodle onto my computer and I may or may not tweak it. Sometimes I add backgrounds utilizing another of my doodles. Other times I may layer a doodle with one of my photographs. I have no idea where my odd doodles come from, all I know is that they seem to fill my every waking moment. Perhaps I should get some sleep...

“Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life.” Oscar Wilde’s theory is that Art sets the tone for how we perceive everything. Without Art, we would not know beauty or despair or be empowered to glean meaning. Through the artist, Art presents us with the achingly beautiful, depressing ugliness, and meaning. I don’t know if I’m 100% there with Oscar (having spent so many nights with him, I’m fairly certain we’re on a first name basis); however, I do believe that Art of whatever form (painting, photography, writing, humor, sculpture, poetry, music, film, food, whatever) does elevate Life. In the sense that without Art, there is merely existence. I’m not saying we all have to get to a museum more often, although that would not be a bad thing. I am saying that Art is actually everywhere, we just need to temporarily forget about the laundry, those aches and pains, our bank balance, or what’s for supper, and simply open our eyes.

This is my Truth: Any art is a good thing. Any form of creative expression is a good thing. So, unless you have serial killer inclinations, I’m all for supporting that expression. Go you.
