Welcome to J. Heaton Designs!
We all love a little piece of wearable art... something that speaks to us and says who we are.
I have been fascinated with making jewelry ever since my mom brought home a box of beads when I was a child. After graduating college with an art degree, I studied gemology, jewelry manufacturing, and design at the Gemological Institute of America where I went on to become an instructor until I changed paths to become a make up artist in the film industry. Jewelry making has remained my passion, however, and I have continued to take classes, explore different techniques, enter design contests, and craft my ideas into reality.
I am inspired by ancient civilizations, nature's beautiful gemstones, symbols, gem lore, legends, spirituality, mysticism... And I love that I feel like an alchemist when I transform a piece of metal or clay into a piece of jewelry. I am even happier when someone feels a connection to something I make.
I am proud that my work has been worn by actors in television shows, has been published in a jewelry-making book, and has won numerous design awards. And I am happy to share my passion with you here on etsy!

Around the web
Gemstones and precious metals have all the beauty, sparkle, and intrigue that can be found in each and every human being. Perhaps that is why I love jewelry so much!
My jewelry is made out of happiness and love with my own hands, intending to bring joy to its wearer for many, many years.
My bracelets are assembled with care and attention paid to detail and quality of materials and workmanship.
I work mainly with sterling silver, gemstones, and precious metal clay. Jump rings are soldered for durability and tool marks are polished off for a comfortable, smooth feel. Most pieces are purposely tarnished in the recessed areas and bright polished on the surface to bring out texture and dimension. Everything is made in a smoke-free environment.
Many of my charms and pendants are made with Precious Metal Clay (PMC). PMC is a clay-like substance in which metal particles (such as pure fine silver or bronze) are mixed with an organic binder. I work the substance like clay, fire it in a kiln where the binder burns off and the metal remains, and then I use various finishing techniques to finish up the resulting metal piece. I love that PMC retains a handmade look and feel. Also, it is a clean, "green," and non-toxic process. My PMC pieces are hand sculpted and finished by me through a variety of methods, and I also create stamps or etchings out of my own artwork to stamp into the clay.

***CARING FOR YOUR JEWELRY***
Many pieces are purposely tarnished (oxidized) in the recessed areas and polished on the surface areas. To brighten the polish if/ when needed, I recommend gently rubbing the piece with a jeweler's polishing cloth.
The more you wear your jewelry, the less it will tarnish!
If you are going to store your jewelry, it will tarnish less if stored in an airtight container or ziplock bag. Different environments will promote tarnishing to different degrees. There are anti-tarnish strips and bags on the market which help reduce tarnishing for a few months at a time, as well as many good cleansers and polishes. However, read all manufacturer's labels carefully and follow directions when using any cleansers or polishes. Some cleansers may harm your metals or stones. Be sure to only use what is appropriate for your type of jewelry. When in doubt or to be cautious, take your jewelry to a jeweler if major cleaning is needed. For general cleaning and brightening maintenance, I prefer gently rubbing with a jeweler's polishing cloth. Never roughly rub, pull or tug on your jewelry or chains. Soapy, lukewarm water and a very soft paint or makeup brush is fine for gentle cleaning. Use sonic or ultrasonic cleansers with caution or not at all. Avoid very hot water.
Jewelry should be taken off before swimming, sleeping, bathing, strenuous activity, and using harsh chemicals or mechanical machinery. Always remove loose accessories and tie back hair if operating mechanical machinery. Jewelry has small parts and is not suitable for small children.
Your precious metal jewelry can last a lifetime and can be passed down through the generations. Feel free to email me if you have any questions about jewelry or if you would like a custom order.
Thank you for visiting my shop and for supporting handmade!
