From a Piece of Wood to Art
Born and raised in Elkview, West Virginia, Jerry Smith is a carpenter by trade. He has always enjoyed creating and building items for his family. In 2003, with the help of his brother Joe, another woodturning craftsman, Jerry learned the art of woodturning through a process of trial and error. Today, passionate about his craft, Jerry can be found spending his free time in his garage working with his lathe or out combing the mountains for just the right piece of wood.
Each bowl is handcrafted from native West Virginia hardwoods that have been carefully chosen for their unique character. To quote Jerry, “I like to take the most gnarly piece of wood, burls or growths, and diseased wood and discover the beauty and character that lie within.” To add further distinction, the natural beauty of each bowl is enhanced by a distinctive natural edge.
Jerry has displayed his unique creations at several exhibitions including the Mountain State Arts and Crafts Fair in Ripley, WV, the Winterfair shows in Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio, and the Vandalia Gathering in Charleston, WV. His work has also been sold through West Virginia’s Tamarack and his online website, www.JLWoodturning.etsy.com.
