I adore this beautiful pen! It is also my new "go-to" pen and I carry it with me everywhere. Shipping was prompt and the packaging was very thorough. I am very pleased with my purchase!

About

Making Pens

I make almost anything out of wood, so I could show many different processes, but I decided to walk you through the steps it takes to make a pen. All pictures here are of making an Amboyna Burl Cigar Pen, with a gold and gun metal pen kit.

First you start with a pen blank, or a piece of wood, usually 3/4" square by 5" long, and a pen kit, or the metal parts of the finished pen. This is shown in the first picture.

Then I saw the pen blank in half, to make two 2.5" pieces, then I use the drill press to drill a hole through the middle, lenghtwise (as shown in the second picture) to allow the brass tube to be glued into each half of the pen blank.

Once the glue cures it's back to the drill press where I use a pen mill to make the ends of the wood perpendicular to the shaft of the brass tube. Then it's on to the wood lathe, where I turn the parts round and to the finished diameter. The beginning phases of turning the wood are shown in the third picture. While the wood is still in the lathe, the wood is sanded and finished. I use a CA glue finish, which requires multiple applications to build up a finish that can be polished through multiple grits (1200 through to 12000 and then polishing compound).

Once the wood is finished, the metal parts are press fit into the brass tubes inside of the finished wood, as shown in the fourth picture.

Finally, you end up with the finished pen that you see in the fifth and final picture!
