I purchased this as a wedding gift for my fiancé. Because he's a chemist, he won't always be able to wear his ring. This will look nice on his dresser, and be the perfect place to tuck his ring when he isn't wearing it. I can't wait to give it to him!

About

From geneticist to artisan woodworker

Science and art have more in common than most people realise: creativity and imagination are the core requirements of both disciplines. Creativity was an important of my 20+ years in biomedical research but I decided to concentrate on expressing myself through wood, with its unparalleled beauty and infinite variation. Now my satisfaction comes from working with my hands on things I can see and handling. My background in biology gave me an appreciation for elegant design—nature trims the fat, punishing the unnecessary, and finds the simplest workable form most suited to that particular context. I try to emulate this, paring down my work to find the minimal design that achieves the effect I want and the possibility of producing elegant and enduring pieces.

I am almost entirely self-taught — my training and education is actually in genetics and embryology, researching birth defects. I starting dabbling with woodworking about 10 years ago, increasing my skills and complexity of design.

Utilitarian objects and tools should facilitate our everyday lives, however we have few expectations that they will also be easy on the eye and well designed. We expect nothing less from luxuries, so why tolerate less from objects that we interact with far more frequently? Imagine how enriched our lives would be if utilitarian objects were also a pleasure to look at, hold and use? My goal is to create elegant pieces that perform well with the minimum amount of design.

Why wood?
Functional and artistic objects are available in a wide variety of materials but none have the combination of visual and tactile appeal of wood. A wood piece cannot be fully appreciated until it is held in the hand. I want my work to encourage this interaction, and if you can resist that urge then I have failed. If you are so wary of an object that you are reluctant to handle it, because it appears fragile or unstable or overly embellished, then I have failed.
