Announcement   I've decided to do a complete SHOP REBRAND! My art miniatures and art prints will now be available here. I'll be listing my ornaments in July and October during Shop Updates - so make sure you're following me on Facebook to stay up to date on when those are going to be!

Everything in my shop is HAND MADE by me, 100%, from start to finish. I roll out the clay into a slab, cut out the form, create it, fire it in my kiln, glaze it, fire it again, take the pictures, post it here for you all to see, package up your order and send it to ya! There is NO middle man. Just yours truly....and the hubby. He's my shipping manager and drops all the boxes off at the post office... hehe :-D

I accept credit cards, debit cards, Etsy Gift Cards, and PayPal.

Please read all policies, especially those regarding shipping if you need your item quick, fast, and in a hurry! :-) When preparing to place your order PLEASE look at the processing time. Most made to order items have a current processing/turn around time of 6-8 weeks. Please keep this in mind when ordering. If you need it sooner, send me a message so we can agree on a shipping/processing time. THANKS!!

Really great! Love the blue that shows through where the design is. Made a great gift, perfect for tea bag rests.

This is a beautiful piece of art. Came right on time in a gift box, which was perfect since I got it for my son, and he just loves it! Thank you!!

About

100% Differently-abled

Shawna N.M. Barnes is a ceramic sculptor living in coastal Maine, where she creates sculptures that engage, entertain, and invite conversation. Her signature anthropomorphic style of giving animals humanistic personalities has recently propelled her art career forward.

With her hands in clay bringing her imagination to life in 3D, nothing else matters to Shawna; not the pain, the emotional turmoil, the disabilities... none of it. It all goes away, and she is at peace. She is currently working on a series of sculptures that center around jobs animals had during various historical conflicts – “Animals of War”.
Shawna is a retired differently-abled Iraqi war veteran. She served for nearly 4 years in the US Army as a combat medic. Right around her seventh month in Iraq she began having seizures which led to her medical retirement in 2011. Since then, more diagnosis’ have been made that explain a laundry list of ailments. In summer of 2017, she finally received a working diagnosis. Myasthenia Gravis - a neuromuscular autoimmune disease. There is no cure, but lifestyle changes and treatments can provide a livable life. In addition to MG, she also must work around/through a seizure disorder, cervical dystonia, peripheral neuropathy, degenerative disc disease, hypotension and vertigo, and PTSD.

The art miniatures are resin reproductions created from an original sculpture that I've made a silicone mold from. Everything is still hand made by yours truly, just in a different material that allows for a more durable and economical art option for my collectors.

All ornaments and small dishes in my shop are hand crafted from various types of clay. The clay is first rolled through the slab roller to make it the desired thickness. I then either stamp out my desired shapes with various tools or cut them free hand. The shapes/templates are then allowed to air dry completely. At this point, I have a choice to make, to bisque fire them plain or paint an underglaze design on them. Those that I paint an underglaze design on will get a clear glaze top coat in the glaze kiln. Those that I do not paint with underglaze are fired plain and then decorated with various glazes (these are not as detailed). For me, the underglazing is the most fun part of the whole process. I enjoy seeing just how intricate I can get in the details of the piece.

A kiln is what is used to “fire” each and every piece. Each piece is “bisque fired” when it is completely air dry. It reaches 1900+ degrees Fahrenheit. The pieces are then glazed and then “glaze fired”. The glaze firing exceeds 2200 derees Fahrenheit. When the pieces are removed from this kiln, so long as the appropriate glazes are used, the ceramics are food, microwave, oven, and dishwasher safe!
