If you need something flowery for birthday, wedding, or other special occasion, check out my shop and see if I have something that you like. Although some items that I make are one of a kind (especially tsumami kanzashi and tsumami zaiku, of which I use vintage kimono fabrics), I might be able to do custom order for others. So, feel free to drop me a message for further discussion if you'd like to order something specially customized for you.

About

Every cloud has a silver lining and my silver lining is handmade

My life changed considerably when my husband said we had to move to his hometown in Tottori prefecture, Japan. We had been living in Tokyo for about 1.5 years and my husband thought it was time to move and settle in Tottori since his parents were getting old. He was the only child and he had to be near them when they needed his help.

Living in a rural Japan was quite different from what I'd expected. I found that a teaching job was hard to come by. In Tokyo I was teaching English and Indonesian language. And when I was in Indonesia I was a full time English instructor in several schools. Being used to having an active and productive life and living in the hustle and bustle of big cities, I found that life in a rural place is so slow, monotonous and unproductive. I have had very hard time adjusting to this slow-paced, sleepy, less-various life of a rural town. Very little opportunity to earn money doing what you really want. Both my husband and I wanted to do what we had been doing for over ten years - my husband with his Qigong healing and me with English teaching. Unfortunately both jobs aren't well-paid ones in this rural place. Though I found a teaching job, I only teach a few hours a week, which isn't enough to support our household expenses. I thought I had to make use of the large amount of free time doing something that earns me income. And running an online shop is suitable for me.

How I ended up making tsumami zaiku was a journey in itself. I began opening my Etsy shop in 2011, selling batik as my attempt to be productive. My husband had received some money from his grandmother as a gift for our wedding. Thus, we used it to start our batik selling business. Unfortunately it didn't go well. My etsy shop was empty for over 1 year. In mid 2012 I decided to teach myself to sew since I only teach a few hours a week. At that time I noticed that there were a lot of scraps remaining which was too many to be thrown away. I was thinking whether I could make use of these scraps. Then I thought why not making fabric flowers. That's how I began making tsumami zaiku or kanzashi flowers. In the process, I learnt from videos, books, and my own experiments. At the end 2012 I began selling tsumami zaiku or kanzashi on etsy.

So far, I really enjoy making tsumami zaiku and experimenting it for different kinds of accessories and jewelry. I'm a self-taught kind of person so I like to try other crafts such as crocheting or making jewelry. I guess that may be because I'd always loved crafts when I was still at school, whether it was cross-stitching, hand-sewing, making paper flower, etc. And even as I was still a busy English teacher in Indonesia, whenever I had a chance to go out at weekends I always checked out handmade or homemade shops though I didn't have time to actually make handmade items. I even had a dream of running my own handmade shop. Who thought I would be running one due to the financial difficulties that my husband and I are having now. I always try to think there's a silver lining in a cloud ^o^
